Which C64 games did you really like

edited October 2008 in Chit chat
and wish where better on the ZX Spectrum. I remember 2 event games Melbourne House's Way Of The Exploding Fist and David Crane's Ghostbusters where so kickass with their graphics, music and sound effects back in the mid 80's when they came out.

Ghostbusters was far better. Rambo was very good and also better than the Speccy as the Speccy one was frustrating with its scrolling and soldiers which just followed you and only shot in a few angles.

    Split Personalities,
    Midnight Resistance,
Some budget game with tanks in it I cannot remember the name of.

none, i didn't have a C64, i suppose i could have bought some but they prolly wouldn;t have worked on my speccy.

my mate did have some though but they all looked shit, thats why i bought a speccy, glad i did too. or i wouldn't be at WOS, id prolly be over at lemon64 talking about kissing boys or whatever they do in their chit chat section.

Just about anything with multicoloured sprites, scrolling and a soundtrack.

That's actually a pretty small proportion of the games that I like though. ;)

Rags 2 Riches, it looks awful, like the characters are built from stickle bricks or Lego, the sound is annoying, and it's slow. But there's something strangely enjoyable about trying to get a hobo from out of the gutter and on his way to being successful and stinking rich, instead of just stinking.

Bangers and mash, it's a crap pacman clone, and I mean crap, I only like it for the ridiculous story that goes with it :D

"Watch out or the Jimpies will fuck you to death for a sausage"

That's almost a sig worthy quote haha! I may have to think about that one :D

Gunship was great , the remake/sequel for the Ps1 was tosh.

    Uridium

    Airborne Ranger

    Arkanoid

I remember Gunship (and all the microprose wireframe sims) being crap on C64.

I preferred the C64 version of Commando and Rambo. Obviously Uridium since they got it first and you could see the pylons but other than that not a lot really.

Lot's of games looked and sounded better on the C64 but the game play was shite compared to the Speccy and CPC versions and some C64 games looked terrible compared to the z80 versions.

So only a few looked, sounded and played better than the speccy and most of those where terrible conversions from the c64 originals.

Gunship was a great game, I never played it on anyother machine, maybe it's even betterer :)

I only really liked one game on the Crapodore, and I don't even remember what it was called. I mentioned this in another thread ... anywho ... if you know the name of a C64 game where you were a guy on a floating bubble (or a bouncing ball) inside a castle then please let me know kthkyuverymuch.

I thought the spy vs spy games all played better on the C64. (MUCH better in the case of 2 and 3)

I'm pretty sure the speccy version of SpyVsSpy had a glitch where the if you were sword fighting you virutally always won if you attacked your opponent from the right hand side of the screen.

The C64 version seemed to play a bit better (tho' I still love the spec version) and as for the 2 sequels the spectrum versions are absolutely hideous compared to the C64 ones.

EDIT: I forgot SmashTV - The great C64 conversion alongside the spectrum atrocity was enough to turn me green with envy at the time (It's one of my favourite arcades).

Apart from the arcade and countless re-releases on modern day console retro packages, we all know the definitive home version of Smash TV was the SNES version. It may have came after the home micro/computer versions. But I think my first Speccy was dead by the time it came out anyway, and I have no idea if it was out before or after I got my second Speccy. Wouldn't have mattered anyway, none of the computer shops in town sold Speccy stuff by 93 anyway. The only resource for Speccy games was my local electronics store, which still had em' back then if only budget titles. But I only bought 1 Speccy game in 93', it was Streetfighter, and incidentally the last Speccy game I ever bought.

I've never even seen the Speccy version of Smash TV, and I don't want to either :D

Can't be much worse than the Master System version

    Lee Evans is: Space ace!

Tis about the only c64 game I can think of that's better than the Speccy version.

    (for the moment.)

I'm not about to disagree about the snes version of SmashTV... (I had one VERY rich friend with one of those - This was the era of cartridges where he would blow more than £50 on one game- which was quite a bit more money back then)

But I think that the speccy could have managed a great version of Smash TV and the one we got was crap even when compared to the conversion of Robotron made several years earlier.

The Bruty/Perry team did some great games on the spec so I think maybe they hadn't actually played smashTV when they made this one.

And it hurt the C64 version was so good...

Yeah I know that feeling I bought my copy of Smash TV for SNES in about 97, second hand for a tenner. I got the SNES when I was 14, imagine going 4 years without a new game

I played Streetfighter II, and Prince of Persia til' they almost caught fire, and prince of Persia wasn't even mine

    Staff of Karnath
    International Soccer
    Way - exploding fist
I stole it off a space ship.

I didn't really play many back in the day as most of my lot had either Speccys or CPCs, but the ones I played and liked were:

    Way Of The Exploding Fist
    Uridium
    Mugsy's Revenge (of course )

Erm... and that's about it, as far as I can remember anyway!!

There were quite a few that were good on both machines, but I prefered these C64 versions:

    Impossible Mission
    Leaderboard
    Wizball
    Uridium
Monty on the Run (the music was soooo good)
    Rambo
    Exploding Fist
    Eidolon
    Summer/Winter Games

Again, I never had a C64 back in the day but a friend did. Like with the speccy, I eventually got my hands on a second hand one in the early '90s though, really cheap.

The C64 version of Krakout is really good IMHO.

I also really liked "Kick Start II" based on the motorcycle trials TV series, and the level designer that went with it.

NARC was also a favourite of mine.

A friend of mine who did have a C64 back in the eighties used to impress us by playing Arkanoid with his mouse. Also he showed off Outrun too. I'm not sure how good these games would look nowadays, but back then I have to admit they looked impressive at the time.

As for Gunship, I never really got into the C64 version, but I can say that the Atari ST version is excellent, and I have some active pilots in the roster even playing it currently under the Steem emulator.

Of course "Gunship 2000" for DOS is even better and more absorbing again!

ghosts n goblins was good on the c64, also love california games on the 64..

Haha, you should at least check it out. I remember reading the Crash review where they totally raved over this game and I think it got 96% so I bought in on basis of that review ... damn you Crash. I mean it wasn't totally terrible but nowhere near as good to warrant such a high rating. Now if that wasn't a deal with Ocean then I don't know ...

Commando was the first game i ever completed on the 64 and in life as it were i loved that game

I cant believe that so many people prefer the C64 version of Commando!
Commando and BombJack speccy versions are even better than the arcade ones...gameplay wise of course

99,9% of the C64 games had almost the same resolution as Atari2600 (C64:160?200 2600:192x160).I prefer clash to lowdef...

I'm a HUGE fan of Commando and it is very good on the C64. I would say both versions are equal, i like Commando on the C64 as it follows the arcade closely and has an 'ending' whereas the Speccy one just keeps on going.

Bombjack is 100% better than the C64 by far, the arcade game i love though so i wouldnt say its better than that but its a brilliant conversion.

But Commando is very good on the C64

By far the best game I have played on the C64 is Dropzone. A very playable Defender type game. Much more fun than the usually-ranted-about Uridium.

The C64 version of Dropzone is pretty good, but it's better on the Atari 800.

In the words of Archer MacLean: "What was more amazing to me was the challenge of making it work on the less capable Commodore 64. It was a real nightmare implementation, but I did it."

I always liked Archer MacLeans stuff, he was very talented. You can add IK and IK+ to the list of C64 games I prefer. Anyone know what he's up to now? I know he did a couple of Mercury games for the PSP but since then I've heard nothing. His snooker/pool sims were all excellent; Cueball 2 was the best, the following two tried to add daft things and removed some of the stuff that made the second game so good - speeding up the opponent being the primary casualty.

    He's also on Fiends Reunited.

Wonderwoman vs Privacy in her invisible jet

Atari VCS was 192x160? I thought it looked even lower than that. But yes, I too disliked the C64's 160x200 multicolour mode.
