As we all know, the cover tape wars led to some really quite awful games appearing on magazine cover tapes. However, there were also some quite good ones. Which ones were actually the best and the worst?

I'm a sucker for this sort of thing :)

But Play For Your Life the 20th worst? I beg to differ.

I really don't. Mags had the habit of calling their cover tape games utterly fantastic, even though their own reviews had them at 2/10...

What? No mention for PEKING? spent ages on that blessed Mah Jongg game, believe it was destined for release by Zeppelin but got dropped and YS picked it up. Don't quote me on that though, friends often made things up to make me look stupid.

11 people disagree with you :-p

With a score of 8.33, it ranks joint 69th (out of the 253 cover games I considered, which excludes any game with less than 6 votes on WoS).

Batty and Play For Your Life respectively. Didn't even have to look at the list.

You'd still be wrong. Rebelstar, Rebelstar 2 and Dizzy are all ranked higher.

Any chance of a graph or chart showing that the covertape games were mainly crap?

Not that I want to twist the conclusion, mind ;)

Ideally four graphs or charts: YS, SU, CR, and all.

Something simple to start with: considering only games with more than 5 votes on WoS, the average score of YS cover games is 7.25, of SU cover games is 7.31, of Crash cover games is 6.86 and of all cover games is 7.15. The average score of all games on WoS with more than 5 votes is 6.76.

    Sorry :p

Much the same conclusions apply if the vote limit is raised to 10.

So many of the best games found their way onto a covertape that it's almost a meaningless comparison. It's a bit like saying "Which are the best games from companies X, Y and Z who offered their games to the magazines?"

For the best covertape overall though, I'd reckon that it has to be YS58: Tau Ceti, Feud, Rebel and a demo of Ivan "Ironman" Stewart. Any other suggestions?

Hey, no need to apologise :) I think covertapes were mainly crap no matter which mag produced them.

Having said that, an average rating of 7/10 is not so bad - that was the average mark awarded to any game by YS in their reviews.

Are you including game demos in your analysis? After all, a demo of Dominator is not as good as a demo for Chase HQ.

I was late back to school after lunch the day I bought that. I can still see the teacher putting a red L on the register and asking why. :)

Not as bad as the day I bought Thrust on the way to school and missed afternoon registration completely and had to have a chat with the head teacher. She was cool though as my first lesson that afternoon was History and she taught that group.

It's funny how the mention of a covertape reminded me exactly what I was doing that day. I can't remember the days I bought Doom, Quake, Mist any of those titles.

I think the worst YS covertape was either Vatman or YS Capers, or Explorer.

SU probably Brat Attack, not because it was really crap but cos' it was just soooooo boring.

Best one I got with Crash was Egghead, who would've thought that almost 20 years later I could actually talk to the guy who wrote it on here  One of the worst Gladiator.

.....I'm waiting for somebody to say Hyperlane....leave it alone!!! :D

do they do game demos on PC mags anymore?

can you download them some where?

i can get DS game demos on download from certain locations like GAME. and some games let you download a demo to your mates DS. it stays there as long as you have it swtched on.

I absolutely loved the YS Magnificent Seven tape with How To Be A Complete Bastard, Tir Na Nog and 10th Frame (yes, I actually liked that game).

I can't think of the worst one I ever got... it'll come to me though!!

Sinclair Boozer gave away a game called Go Bear Go. It was remake of those block-shoving games and I remember playing that for ages. The others I recall playing loads are Chaos and Rebelstar 2 and one of the worst was Road Race which YS gave away.

Slightly OT but I also seem to remember CRASH had a demo tape (may of been their first) and it had the first level of Ikari Warriors on it which I played to death!

I think all the Magnificent Seven covers had little pics of the covers of each game on the tape.

Now that I come to think of it, I think I liked all of the Maginificent Seven tapes, the one with Hijack (the fourth, I think) was another good 'un. As I remember it, YS always had the best stuff on their covertapes. Crash had a few nice covertapes though, the one with Micronaut One was great.

I actually preferred that to Freez Beez (which was very similar).
