Members of mile's ilk could use a sort of silly clan tag like the kids do in online games, you know what I mean, those letters in brackets which are usually in front of the nickname. Shortening "mile's" to just an m, we'd get something like this (including optional aphostroph) ->
[m'ilk]dm_boozefreek
Man, that clan is damn 1337, innit? Got milk?
Though you wont get the honorary member [m'ilk]Dunny
Here's an idea....Much as I love the massively diverting strays off-topic, it would be cool if you could somehow make them branch off from the main topic..
I don't know if I'm explaining what I mean well...Say for instance, this topic was to branch off into a discussion of cheese. Now, although I'm interested in the topic..I'm also interested in the way conversations start with one thing and branch off in loads of different, mental directions..
So say we could somehow keep the Cheese conversation as part of this topic, but have it branch out in it's own direction and have the Forum topic still going on below the last "On Topic" post...
Uhm, I hope this makes sense, as I'm imagining it as a little diagram in my head...

Sounds like threading to me - I think this forum has a tree view of sorts...
I don't use the New Posts button. Ever. Didn't even notice or remember it until this thread. Do what you like with it.
Foggy has gone off topic in Mile's broken knob thread and is questioning the point of the Chit Chat section and whether it should be closed down.
Er, please don't. It is Off Topic and Chit Chat. It prevents spill over into the other forums.
People enjoy it here. I don't post much in the other forums, just the odd bit of PlusD promotion in the hardware forums. There are other members with much better knowledge than me to post in the other forums.
Mind you if you do close this forum then I'd have more time for "other stuff" it just wouldn't be here which would be a shame. :(

Disappointed that the thread has been purged. I didn't think it was offensive. More like Chit Chat-ting in the pub.
That particular thread has now been removed.
While having a place for off-topicness is good to keep around, letting it completely degrade to the gutter is taking it too far for me.
To be fair, moderation is rarely needed here as we are all adults.
However, this week, two threads have been locked and a thread deleted. It doesn't happen often.

TBH, those sorts of posts need to be reined in a little.

Without mentioning names, the main problem is a select few posters here who spend a good 99% of the time posting drivel on any thread, not just in the chitchat room. Many a time now have I had an interest in a particular topic (speccy and non-speccy related), only to lose interest the moment when the thread is "hijacked".
I don't think the chitchat room should be removed, but there should be more "policing" of the people who are effectively ruining the threads for everyone else.

It's easy to miss these posts so I would suggest using the report post function :)
so who exactly is ruinning the forum? personally I think it's getting better every day...by now I've spent enough time here to know some of the inside jokes, etc, etc...
I have to agree, we're all grown ups aroud here...if we don't like something, we just jump to the next comment. if we feel ofended we can report or talk to the person who has offended us (pm's are good for that also).
not letting people speak or joke, or closing the space where we "chit chat" because we are actually "chit Chatting" just seems a litle to much "1984" for my taste...but maybe that's the point since we're all a bit retro around here...
I think sometimes we all make to big a deal about stuff, example: when I asked if there where any bullfighting games, I nearly got bashed for being a barbarian who has pleasure on torturing animals, when all I asked for, was for info on a game (I wonder if the reaction would be the same about fishing... I never heard any one do bashing for someone trying to kill the shark in JAWS...). Just relax people!
That said, I have to admit I have been offended on this forum: not wanting to name names, making a post about some naked photos of old Girlfriend and then not showing them to the forum users it's just dam offensive if you ask me!!!
and finally...has any one figured out what are the keys to the bullfighting game? I've punched every one of them, but I cant seem to kill the dam animal...

Seconded. If a serious question is asked, at least have the decency to allow enough time for serious answers before posting drivel. It's pretty disrespectful otherwise.

That's a little arbitrary, how long is long enough? Serious question I'm not being flipent it's always going to be a judgement call and if where arbitrary lines in metaphorical sand are involved somebody is always going to be upsetting someone else.
A thread was locked yesterday partly because I got uppity because I though the original poster hadn't been given enough respect. If it was in the wrong forum (games) perhaps moving it to a more correct one would have suited better. Instead it was subverted by the very people who are quick to complain others are off topic into a discussion of off-topicness.
The thread could have been split with a little care so the two topics could have run to their natural conclusion.
It seems that certain people are allowed to jump into threads and declare them off-topic (which then becomes a third topic) yet other people aren't allowed to deviate from the topic without getting jumped on. If people honestly believe a single one-liner pun ruins a thread perhaps they need to get a life because the rest of us can handle both the seriousness and a little light relief (I await Miles subversion of that line) without any problems.
Another serious point is one 'offender' came out yesterday as having Aspergers and I have also made it plain I've got Aspergers so we aren't always sure where a line in the sand exists and to be honest I don't really care I have enough problems with communication that if I worried about over stepping the mark I wouldn't talk to any body. In fact I once only spoke the words "Yes", "No", "Thank You" and "Please" to people outside my immediate family for 12 months due to the way my condition manifests itself sometimes. So if I sometimes upset people, I'm sorry but I'm not about to let it ruin my day. Declaring something off-topic when the 'offender' has difficulty in communication is in poor taste for starters.
I like pie...who the hell has a problem with that!?
It's not that you like pie ... it's how you saidit ... you sounded like that William Murderface on Metalocalypse ... I had to wipe the spit off my monitor.
Not when it degenerates into some of the crap being posted here recently.
Do we really want to discuss someones genitalia?
Agree with you up to a point ... at the same time though he came to us with a legitimately horrendous health-issue and was seeking assistance. He even told us why he was uncomfortable with going to see a doctor due to the close-knit circumstances at work.
It became bad when it digressed from the actual health-issue.
But that's just my opinion on it.

Believe me even if it happened, this would never happen :D
Yeah, the GayLords clan would never let us leave ... :-P
Thats what we need a [gaylord] tag.

rant over, let's all be friends again.
(this thread is established enough for derailment to commence).
