Saints Row II OTT

edited October 2008 in Chit chat
Just sitting here watching Countdown to UFC 89 on Setanta Sports and there's been about five breaks throughout the hour and every break features an advertisement for Saints Row 2 for X-Box 360.

Judging from the adverts it seems like the Saints Row 2 designers and programmers have gone all out to feature more over the top action than the latest Grand Theft Auto.

For example, while GTA features a helicopter you can fly and buildings you can jump off, Saints Row 2 appears to have a bit where you can JUMP OFF a helicopter into a building. Also - where GTA has a katana as a weapon and several motorbikes you can ride, Saints Row 2 appears to have a bit where a person RIDING a motorbike is also wielding a katana at the same time.

Graphics and 3d movement still looks shitter than GTA though. The whole Saints Row 2 thing appears a lot less slick than GTA.

What does everybody else think?

I hope so, man I hope so. I was sooooooooooooooooooooo disapointed with GTA IV, I like pissing about, looking for easter eggs, and finding stupid "what if..." things to do and bollocks to the storyline.

I loved Vice City and San Andreas, GTA IV made me mourn the ?45 I could ill afford to part with.

I think it looks pretty good. The first one was extremely OTT as well, it's one of things that sets it apart from the GTA games* (in a good way). I hope the whole "gang respect" thing remains intact, it was the best thing about the game... you couldn't just bash away at the missions non-stop, you had to earn respect to get them.

    * EDIT: Actually, it's what sets it apart from just GTA IV really, seeing as all GTA games previous to that were extremely OTT as well.

I didn't buy the original as it just looked to be a GTA rip off, and this one looks no different.

I was disappointed by GTA4 though :( especially compared to San Andreas.

That's exactly why I steered clear of it for so long, but it's actually got a game of it's own in there somewhere. It's not bad.

I did enjoy it more that gta 4 i also thought crackdown (another gta clone) was on par.

I know these two games steal heavily from GTA but GTA 4 nicked ideas from these clones aswell.

    Namely

Saints Row's Map road marking thingy which shows you the quickest route to your destination

Scarface's 360 degrees of shooting whilst driving instead of just driveby left and right.

I haven't progressed beyond the first GTA :-o

I got about 50-odd% through GTA IV and then gave up as I was bored with the missions. A very good game, but nowhere near one of the greatest games ever that the mags were spouting.

I too was dissapointed with GTA4. Somehow, it just seemed to me to loose alot of what made the last few games so much fun. I really hate the fact that it's so much harder to loose the cops, even with just one star you have to run a mile before they give up. All the hidden packages had gone too. OK, so there were "flying rats", but they just wern't the same.

The first Saint's Row was very good, but rather "buggy". I did enjoy it though. It was a more entertaining gmae and was very funny in places (who hasn't pulled over just to beat up a guy dresses as a milkshake/hotdog etc?) I'm unsure about buying the new one though as I'm really low on cash and I already have GTA3-4, plus the first one and the brilliant Crackdown as well. But, it was my birthday yesterday and I'm still owed presents off people, so I may ask for that.

on the PS2, GTA III (for me) was like omfg awesome!

it's like they've gone back to that game, taken the loading times out, made more sense of river crossings, let the charachter climb shit, and made nice graphics.

If they'd given that treatment to Vice City, or S.A i'd have loved it.

Put a PS3/360 in a time machine and show my twenty something year old self GTA IV when I was playing GTA III, mand I'd have loved it.

But... as we all know, graphics and sound do not a game make, and after seeing Vice City and S.A (and I love them both in different ways) I just feel so "meh" about IV.

    I haven't finished GTA4.

The 360 came back from repair this week and I was about to have my first game since June and I just couldn't be arsed. Luckily SWMBO reminded me I got Battlefield:Bad Company just before she went in hospital so I'd got a new game I'd never played. So that's on and when I've finished and fancy my next play the new COD will be out.

I loved Vice City and was a little disapointed by San Andreas and although GTA4 looks fantastic when I put it on yesterday I just had a ten minute drive, shot a few cops and bought down a helicopter and wanted to turn it off again.

The first Saints Row looked awesome on the adverts but at the time I couldn't afford a 360 and when I played it I found the whole thing a massive disapointment. I can't explain why.

25 to Life was a total GTA rip off and didn't even attempt to be it's own game and that really suffered for it.

I thought the original was the worst game I had played since Rainbow 6 on the Dreamcast. I gave my copy away to someone who also thought it was rubbish and gave it to someone else.

i'll probably get this but it'll be the PC version (out next month) - some folks in uk.games.video.misc seem to like it and its predecessor more than the GTA series.

i'm busy playing warhammer online and crysis warhead atm and have far cry 2 on pre-order.

GTA 4 grows on you....I was a bit dubious of it at first, but now having fun finding a few easter eggs and glitches, and loving the fact that although I've completed the story, random people are still appearing in the street with new missions for me..

I've got the first Saint's Row and it's alright, but compared to GTA it feels kinda cheap...it's good fun online though, Protect Tha Pimp being a particular favourite game variant...As for the 2nd one, it looks like a good companion piece to GTA4 and should keep us busy till the download content appears...

Well, I played Saints Row 2 last night and I can say that it's much more fun than both the first game AND GTA4. Alot of the reviews that I had read all siad about how much fun it is and it actually is. The first time I found out that you coud throw people found me spending 15 mins on a large boat, chucking people overboard. The graphics are much better this time and there are far fewer glitches (I've not lost my car while still sitting in it, as has happend to me several times in the first game). On the down side, some of the AI is still rather iffy. If you shoot a gun, people will run a mile and duck for cover (good), but throw anything at them, bins/road signs/another person at a group of people then anyone not hit will just stand around like nothing has happened.

But, They game IS fun and I managed to get the collectors pack (complete with book, map and 1gig "bullet" memory stick) for the same price as the normal version (?38) in Gmaestation.
