You know apart from Jetpac, Atic Atac, Sabrewulf, and Underwurlde, he could have been right.

I'm going to come out of the closet as a secret Ultimate hater, I disliked more of their games than I did like.

A lot of them were overhyped "More of the Same" crap, and alot of their console stuff as RARE was shite as well.

What you gonna do about it?

    Nothing that's what! :p

I've gone for Dalet Thompson because (and I've not played either speccy game in years, so I could be wrong) I think it had more "sports" than Hypersports. Plus, I always had a problem with getting Hypersports to load. Having said that, I play Hypersports on MAME quite alot (I acn get full points everytime on the shooting range!)

It's a very close call in the end though.

You know, you actually got a fellow supporter here! The Ultimate games were definitive technicaly great and ahead of their time, but I did not personally enjoy to play almost any of them, with exception of Pssst and Underwurlde, and perhaps Jetpac.

Ultimate are overrated - good in their time, but bettered many times over.

I'm of course talking about their first few games. The churning out of the same old same old I can happily ignore.

Hypersports for me. I've only played Daley Thomson a couple of times so wasn't too sure. In Hypersports i've never managed to get past the gymnastics stage.

Have you tied Double Dragon on the VCS, although it should be called Single Dragon.

    Unfortunately, yes!

Actually it's not unplayable, but anyone expecting a Track and Field style miracle is going to be disappointed. It's one hell of a curio :)

I couldn't do that in the arcade, so I'm pretty glad it didn't make it to the Speccy version :)

Could *anyone* do it in the arcade? It's got to be one of the hardest things (apart from Defender) to play in an arcade game.

I wish Joffa had tested the swimming world record. I asked him on here ages ago and he admitted that he never tested whether it could be beat. Before someone mentions it, I know you can in a slowed down emulator, but to beat it real-time is impossible.

Yep, I'd think you'd need to have had a Spectrum in 1983 to fully appreciate Ultimate games, as then they truly were special. Within a couple of years, everyone else had caught up though.

I don't think it's to do with catching up - the thing about Ultimate for me is that a lot of their games weren't user friendly. Technically they took the machine forward but their games could be infuriating. When I play Ultimate games like Sabre Wulf, the swear box is always full. As for Underwurld, well that's just unacceptable... :x

Well I still think UPTG were great and Jet Pac, Cookie, Atic Atac, Knight Lore and Gunfright are amongst the finest ZX Spectum games released.

When I play ZX Spectrum games now on the Nintendo DS it is seems to me that Ultimates games were slightly more polished and professional looking than most other games companies stuff.

The controls on Ultimate games were not always so comfortable, but this isn't a problem these days with emulation so the games now play even better.

Daley Thompson and Hyper Sports are both great, but I voted for DT as that came out first and was the one I have most fond memories of.

I do agree about Sabre Wulf and Underwurlde as they were both incredibly poorly designed games in a playability sense. Hard I can handle but hard coupled with unfair makes the games a chore to play.

Some of their earlier games undefinable keyboard layouts were unforgivable and made them harder games to play than they should have been.

But then again, hindsight is a wonderful thing and you REALLY did need to be there at the time. (not 1 year after or even 20 years after) to appreciate that all the above didn?t matter a jot. They were considered great games at the time (for all their faults) and for the most part they were unmatched.

I wouldn?t swap the memory of that moment Knight Lore arrived in the post direct from Ultimate, loading the game up and being absolutely amazed at the graphics for anything but again you had to be there at THAT time to appreciate it.

You have to remember that most of us gamers were playing Atari VCS games prior to getting a Speccy in 1982 and TV PONG machines before that so it was a massive leap forward when we started to play the likes of JetPac.

Absolutely. I will never, ever, ever forget the moment in my local computer shop when they loaded KL for the first time and within 20 seconds it was about 10 deep around the Speccy with people almost climbing on each others shoulders to get a look. It really was jaw-dropping for the time.

Totally agree. Same with Elite, when i first saw it i thought it was crap but then got sooooo addicted to it. Years later it hasnt stood the test of time well but back then in the day i thought it was exceptional.

What happened to Hyper Olympics/Track And Field ? Imagine should have made that at the same time as Hypersports.DTC was rubbish.Activision Decathlon on C64 was OK though.

Was that a hidden meaning to one of the programmers?

It refers to Dan Hartley, he programmed the 'penalty shoot out' and went on to help out on Elite's Commando.
