I think they should still stick with the serious actor as they have done with the last two doctors, but really give him a psychotic edge - a risk taker who sacrifices for the greater good. I'd heard James Nesbitt mentioned and I think he could give it a good go for one season as he can perform a dark side of a character very well (Murphy's Law for example).
It's a bit like James Bond. I remember when Daniel Craig was first announced there was all manner of moaning as he "wasn't good looking enough" to be Bond. Post Casino Royale those moaners have long since disappeared as it's obvious he's a damn fine actor and when damn fine actors are given damn fine scripts they perform magic.
