How does one capture video from a Windows application?

All the movie-maikng software I've looked at require an external source. :(

    I've not used it yet myself, but CamStudio is apparently quite good... and free!!

    Depends what you wanna capture. If it's from a webcam, then that's all you need - either one built into a laptop (which is quite common in new ones now), or one plugged in.

    If it's video from something else (VHS, camcorder etc...) then of course you'll need some input card. I use a Pinnacle Systems Studio DC10+ that I bought nearly 10 years ago (still runs an absolute treat in my XP setup) for all analogue video input, and a firewire connection for my miniDV video input (still in my mind the best format for digital video editing).

    I've heard good things about FRAPS - just select an area of the screen and it captures at a high framerate.

    The misses uses WMCapture a lot which produces very good quality videos.
