Advance Wars for GBA

edited January 2009 in Chit chat
For years I've heard about this game, just recently downloaded it...and I'm totally adicted to it! it's a mix of comand & conquer, classic RPG and...well it's fun!

It's just a shame that I've only found it this late...

I've downloaded AW2, but I want to finisg N?1 before I start it!

you thought about the game, tips, clues etc.

    addictive isn't the word!!!

i have the new ones on my DS, so me and the girlfeind play co-operativly, and i must say we spend hours building our armies up for the final strike, then spend a good 15 mins deciding what to do. id love to play it with more people and have proper battle plans in place.

started off on the GBA version, and not much has changed, better graphics and new vehicals, in fact the new games have all the old maps, as they were that good.

i wasn't so keen on the levels where you had a set number of vehicals etc, i much prefered to do it my own way.

A great series, got a lot of play out of the first Advance Wars game, picked up the sequel recently but not had a chance to play. Have the first DS game but not the second.

Bar the occasional slip, the control method is spot on. And there's a lot of game packed into the carts.

yeah, I picked up a second hand GBA with this game a while ago, and played it a lot.

I'd pay to download that on to a PC or 360 TBH.

It's turn based. I like turn based. :)

I have the DS version and it's ok ... it's not quite what I wanted. I LOVE turn-based games but AW is too restrictive for me. UFO is still my all-time fave.

I really enjoyed the first two GBA installments. The second is better in most aspects but also a lot easier (not a problem getting most S rankings even on the hard campaign, something I really can't say about the first one). This makes them both excellent.

Later I got the first one for DS as well but got bored in the middle of the campaign. The double COs didn't really work for me, and their combined CO powers are just too much. I know it was likely added to solve the stallmate like situations which eventually happen in multiplayer games, but still...

OTOH, I heard the second DS one is a bit of a return to the roots, so it might be worth picking up.

If you like this kind of game, then I would highly recommend the Nectaris series I've mentioned here on WOS a few times, the games are in the same vein. The original PC-Engine console game was perfectly ported for Win95, and there's also the "bastard child" version by Sunflower which, while having the same title, is a different game with many new units and almost 100 maps, some of which will make you tear your hair out (this version requires DosBox or similar to run on a more recent OS).
The older version was made freeware by Hudson Soft, for the later one I have no idea - anyway, look here for more info.

BTW, anyone who likes Advance Wars shall try Fire Emblem as well. Similar yet different, some people like it more, some less.

I love Advance Wars 2 and only recently I tried Fire Emblem - The Sacred Stones. Both are clearly made by the same company but to me they're quite different beasts as well. FE has much more RPG elements that need constant attention, like character stats, weapon stats etc.

Apparently there's a new version of Fire Emblem for the DS that got great reviews. Will definitely check it out.

You could glue an Advance wars cart into your GBA and it wouldn't be a waste of your console.

I have one of the fat DSs, which has a GBA cartridge slot as well as the DS one (not sure if the newer ones have that). Advance Wars has been in it since day one. In fact, someone may have actually glued it in, but I have no reason to check :)

DS Lite has the GBA slot, the next model (DSi, with built-in cameras, web browser and downloadable games, but region-locked) will NOT have a GBA slot.
