Mainly 60's and 70's stuff, classic rock, prog, folk, blues, Canterbury. As time goes by there's less and less new music worth listening to. New rock/metal seems to be mainly shouty aggression without any substance behind it. I don't bother getting down with the kids, they can't keep up, no stamina you see...

I started playing guitar in the late eighties, so major influences were Guns and Roses, Mr Big, Joe Satriani, David Lee Roth / Whitesnake with Steve Vai on guitar, Extreme, and Allan Holdsworth as mentioned on the jazz thread (!), his heaviest albums are Metal Fatigue and Wardenclyffe Tower. You need to listen to the opening 10 seconds of the track 'Metal Fatigue', 1st track on the album off that name, to truly understand the power of an open A power chord!

Also blues-rock like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Gary Moore, Jeff Healey, and (nowadays) Johnny Lang and Robben Ford

My heavy rock guitar playing is on the website www.soundclick.com/jonkingsman

I have soft spots for Alice Cooper (pre Poison) and Motorhead.

I love most kinds of metal & rock, from classic rock to death metal, from progressive rock & metal to doom, old and new. Bands/albums: way too many to be listed, but my favourites would include Dream Theater, Blind Guardian, Savatage, Skyclad, Therion, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Sex Machineguns, Amorphis, Dark Tranquillity, Racer X, Judas Priest, Joe Satriani...

About the new stuff, I don't like Nu-metal or hardcore, but I love the symphonic and boombastic metal (such as Hollenthon or Therion), and also love the weird and avantgarde (Arcturus, Unexpect, Sebkha-Chott...).

Can I rock with the kids? Well, I still go to concerts, if that counts...

Some metal/rock bands I like: Pantera, Damageplan, Sepultura, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, System Of A Down, Slipknot, Korn, Turbonegro, HIM, Faith No More, GNR, Velvet Revolver, Rage Against The Machine, Soundgarden, Audioslave... the list goes on and on!! I like most metal really, although apart from Sepultura I'm not mad about death-metal (Nepalm Death, Satyricon etc).

... and yes, I still rock (and throw beer) with the kids!! :D

I got into metal around 1990. The first metal album i bought iron maiden's iNo prayer for the dying'. Started listening to bands such as Iron Maiden, black sabbath, led zeppelin and def leppard. Then i started getting into heaver stuff like megadeth, testement and slayer. I don't listen to much anymore but i still like iron maiden and led zeppelin but i prefer listening to the 60's/70's stuff like deep purple and jimi hendrix.
I also like Ash and Pink Floyd

I've always liked mainly Hip Hop, and Punk, with a few weird things on the side, but I went through a grungy stage between the ages of 14 and 15, grew my hair out listened to a lot of Nirvana and Pearl Jam. I've always had a bit of a soft spot for stuff like Sabbath and Zepplin, since I grew up listening to stuff like that.

Rock/metal bands I'm quite picky with as I tend to only like one or 2 tunes by them, and think the rest are utter shite. Like for instance System of a Down I love Toxicity, BYOB, Cigaro, and legend of Zelda, but I can't stand any of their other stuff.

I used to like crossover before the term was invented, stuff like the Judgement Night Soundtrack, and Senser. But all that crossover and Nu Metal stuff can bollocks right off, what a pile of cacka! All that poppy emo punk stuff like My chemical Romance, and Panic at the disco can go eat a fat poo as well, what a pile of nob!
    Every night is curry night!

    Senser.

bought their CD the other day in some 2nd hand shop. the one with their big tune 'Eject' on it. hadnt heard that since school! sounds a bit dated now though

Metal I like: ACDC, Van Halen, Megadeth, Pantera, Slayer, and new death metal like Lust Of Decay and Brodequin., I don't like old death metal it sounds so badly recorded and amateur. but the new stuff seems a lot better. juat like a swirling mass of noise

bands I don't like: Dream Theater (big posers with all technique and no feeling) and some terrible scandinavian band called Nightwish. also agree about the Nu:Metal stuff, rubbish. Limp Bizkit  crap!

It's the name of one of their early demos; a live set recorded on November 29, 1982, at the Old Waldorf in San Francisco back when Dave Mustaine was still in the band.

    what bands? albums? genre?

Megadeth, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Dreamtheater, Muse, Led Zepp, Deep Purple, Rainbow, AudioSlave, Pink Floyd, The Doors, a bit of Marilyn Manson, a bit of Rob Zombie, et al
do you like classic rock/metal? prog rock, psychedelic, glam, thrash, black,
    doom, death, battle metal?

More of a classic rock fan myself. I can't stand doom/death/thrash metal.
do you like old stuff or new stuff as well?
    is new stuff too noisy?

Old stuff I can take. The new stuff is way too much noisy and incomprehensible to me. Maybe I'm just growing old.
can you rock with the kids anyday of the week.

Not if they are into this death metal stuff.

The first metal stuff I started listening to was GnR's UYI. Then I went straight into Sepultura

    Stuff I like:
GnR, Sepultura (max era), Alice Cooper (70s stuff), Iron Butterfly, Sabbath (Ozzy only), Ozzy (80s only, although Ozzmosis has grown on me), Muse, Metallica, AC/DC, Aerosmith (the first Columbia years (1971-85)), Alice In Chains, Bathory, Deicide, Burzum, Mad Capsule Markets, The Black Crowes (although I don't have anything by them now), Cannibal Corpse, Celtic Frost, Cradle Of Filth, Zao, Iron Maiden, Excrementory Grindfuckers, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Pantera, Damageplan, Pearl Jam, Pig Destroyer, the WiLDHEARTS, Rammstein, Rockbitch, Slayer, Stormtroopers of Death, W.A.S.P., Type O Negative, Therapy?, White Zombie (not so much Rob's solo stuff though), Nile, Ministry (NOT the dance era!!), Lawnmower Deth, Machine Head (the first album is fucking brill), G.W.A.R., Meshuggah, Garbage, Green Day, Bad Religion, Juliette & the Licks.

Probably loads more that I've forgotten about.

At the moment I've been playing Metallica and GnR the most.
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.

ooh blimey this threads had a few posts over night/day :P
ive been into metal quite a bit over the years (even tho ive been a punk/raver aswell for nearly as long)

i first heard iron maiden when 2 minutes to midnight was on the radio back in the early...ish 80's, also countdown / tom sawyer by rush i remember loving on the radio too.
when i left shcool i went to college for a while and met a metaller who wanted some punk stuff......so i gave him a tape with gbh/english dogs and i think exploited on, and he gave me a tape with i think metallica/slayer on.....later on i remet him cos he drummed in my mates thrash metal band.
which brings me on to my 87 - 1990 years where i was into crusty music .......grindcore and thrash metal etc
bands like carcass, godflesh, napalm death (which i have the 2nd album logo tattooed on my arm) aswell as bands like celtic frost, venom, sodom, acid reign, reanimator etc.
but i also have quite a large metal section which encompasses thrash/doom/death/black aswell as a glammy section, a classic rock section (led zep, acdc, lynerd skynerd etc) and even a nwobhm section :P ) jaguar, venom, motorhead, black rose among others)
i also have a prog, kraut, jazz, electronic rock box with stuff like rush, sky, yes, pink floyd, tangerine dream, tomita and enid in

I'm a massive metal fan (some of you may have guessed already :D ) It's probably easier to list the kind of rock/metal that I don't like. I'm not a fan of:

    Nu-metal
    Emo
    Metal-core/Scream-core
70's rock, apart from Ozzy era Sabbath and Alice Cooper (ok, a little Status Quo and Deep Purple too)
    Machine Head from Supercharger onwards
Most of what's in Kerrang each week (not because it's in Kerrang but most of it is kiddy metal)
I'm not a massive fan of hard rock either. Only Guns N' Roses, Meat Loaf and Bon Jovi are bands that I'll listen to and even then, I need to be in the mood to.

My main likes are Black Metal, early 90's in particular, Death Metal, again, 90's Death Metal as not much after 2000 is worth listening to.

80's Thrash is also a good choice. Metallica, Megadeth, Tankard, Slayer etc (Slayer havn't put out a decent record since Divine Intervention (the punk covers album doesn't count).

Oh, I love a but if Iron Maiden too :D

I know I never ever listen again to:
    The Stranglers
    Talking Heads
    David Lee Roth
    Led Zep
    Deep Purple
    Def Leppard

My iPod is now full of Podcasts and Rush and the occasional Iron Maiden and Fish. That's it.

 That's some whacking great list you've got there! It's more of a catalogue

I'm gonna keep my embarrassingly small list under a towel or something :) (Although it does feature so quality stuff - just not THAT much of it!)

Is a lot of that on vinyl? I hope it is :) (deja vu creeps in......)

The large percentage used to be vinyl but CD's are now becoming the majority. I reckon I've got around 1200 vinyl albums and 12" singles.

I had to write a program to catalogue it all cos sometimes I find stuff I never realised I had and on occasion end up with 2 of something.

I've often thought about doing that myself, but it's going to take me ages to catalogue all mine. I do own one or two dupes, but I knew that when I brought them (promo's, LTD's etc). I suppose I should make a proper list of my stuff, just incase (God forbid) that I get robbed. That way I'll have a list to give to the police ready for them to file it away ;)
