I always loved Boulder Dash on the spectrum. I used to go to bed and could see the characters and hear the ameoba and "play the game" while trying to go to sleep.
Who dares wins 2, I think me and PJ are the only ones who really like this game everyone else seems to think it's a naff commando clone. Personally I don't think it really plays like commando. It's obviously where the influence came from, but due to the flick screen nature of the game and the way the enemies and environmental hazards are positioned I actually like it better than Commando.
Rockman is a nice little game, it's aged quite poorly, but one thing about it is if you stop playing it for years you almost have to re-learn everything.
Sad but Caves of Doom, I really like that game for some reason :D
Manic Miner, even though I finished it about 22 years ago I still like to play it, because even after all this time weither I finish the game depends on weither or not I can pass the solar power generator, the warehouse is for gaylords ;)
Another sad one Specventure, I love playing that game after after all this time.
Pippo, that's another one that always makes me want one more go.
Lazy Jones I always like to see if I can go round at least once.
Target renegade, love it, but it's better in 2 player, me and one of my old school pals used to play it almost everytime we were at each others houses, even though we'd completed it many, many times.
On several occasions I spent the entire day, from waking up to going to bed, playing Elite. Felt really bad about it but the time just seemed to go... Dunno if that counts as a Speccy game since it was originally a Beeb game(?)
Spent quite an excessive amount of time with the "just one more go" urge on The Great Escape, R-Type, Thrust, and Spooked.
Tranz Am, Thrust, BombJack(as addictive as MSG).
There's more - but those are the first 3 that spring to mind.
"I should use simulator loosely 'cos I don't think it's quite like this on the beach with helicopters and fires and the jumping beach buggy" - paulisthebest3uk 2020.
when i was a kid, it was prolly skool daze, as i would spend house walking around getting up to mischief, or just trying to learn before i got sent home.
i suppose now with games like GTA and bully, i can mess about more on them.
Soooo, it would be arkanoid, that game can always get me playing, i find it much better than arkanoid 2.
I've definitely missed loads out but it would be quite interesting doing a full list and discovering what was the "ZX Spectrum Golden Year" for yourself. From this short list I guess mine was 1983. It's also interesting to note that between 1986 and 1988 I'd obviously discovered beer and women and playing games became secondary.

Outside Speecy, Super Mario Bros for NES (most addictive thing ever) and UFO: Enemy Unknown for PC
There's more - but those are the first 3 that spring to mind.

1st - Rebelstar
2nd - Football Manager
3rd - Nodes of Yesod
4th - Elite
5th - Lords of Midnight
Just played this game for the first time today. Nice breakout clone, but the keyboard controls make it more difficult that it should be.
Scrabble
Renegade
Target Renegade,
and (oddly) Chubby Gristle.
There were others I should think, but these are the first few which spring to mind. Oh, and Chase HQ.
<edit> Just noticed someone mention Pang - used to play that an awful lot too.
