Chess recommendations for XP

Can anyone recommend a place to get a chess game for Windows XP?

There are a few out there, would prefer one that you have used and free if possible.

cheers.

Crafty, Fruit and Gnu Chess are all good; way better than I am at any rate.

Ooooh, best be careful of Necros ... he's a sneaky one ;-)

I enjoyed the Chessgame in Vista ... wonder if they've made that for the XP yet.

    Being serious (Noooooo)...

If you're interested in online chess, then www.redhotpawn.com is a great site. It was recommended to me by someone here a couple of years ago. Haven't logged on in ages though but I think I still have a few active games. :D

The best PC Chess program I know of is Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess, available free from:

    http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?gameid=2721

It's old, and is for DOS, but it works fine in XP if you set the compatability* mode to Windows 95.

There might well be far better available now, but this game is very good, and has everything you need in a Chess game.

    * Create a shortcut to the .exe of the game, and right click over the shortcut, and select Compatability > Windows 95. And maybe select 256 Colours and 640x480 mode too, I can't remember, but you're probably better off ticking "Disable visual themes" and "Turn off text services" too. Then just click the shortcut to run the game.

Edit: Just saw that the download link is broken (temporarily, according to the site) - if you want the game, pm me with your e-mail address.

I've just loaded Windows 7 onto one of my test machines and it has a very nifty little chess game included.

Don't know if it plays well but it looks pretty.

ChessMaster 10th edition is a splendid game with all the bells and whistles expected from a modern game as well as a cracking good AI, excellent tutorials, puzzles, famous games, etc etc. Plus it's going at an unbelievably cheap rate where I'm staying (Mumbai) so I expect it should be the same there! ;)
