Looking into a CD/DVD Burner
Can you folks give me some advise?
I'm searching for a (preferably free) simple CD/DVD burner to replace Nero. No big features. Just basic burning functionality. It however needs to be reliable. Say, one coaster every 50 burns.
This is what I need:
- Burn several CD/DVD formats and sizes
- Burn from images
- Burn bootable CD/DVD
- Burn multisession CD/DVD
- Support for UDF/Joliet/ISO9660
- Burn verification step
This is what I don't need:
- blu-ray
- video or sound related features
What are you ladies and gentleman using? And how happy are you?
EDIT:
Oh, for Windows XP and and absolutely no special drivers needed.

cdrecord or wodim - very happy.
Oh...try ImgBurn.
I use Nero...
Sorry mate, I can't help, but why replace Nero? Nero does everything you could ask for, surely?
If you have a specific need that Nero doesn't address, then hopefully either someone on here, or google.com can help, but if you're having trouble with Nero then please feel free to post any problems - I'm no expert but I've used it a lot and I might be able to help, and others on here are much more knowledgable than me, so we might be able to help.
"If you don't like it, don't use it". I'm following that.
In any case, there's also the matter of my 512Mb laptop where I would like to replace Nero for something more lightweight. But i'm considering the possibility of changing this machine to a full linux installation. So that may not be much of an issue anymore.
oh that's not what you meant
Soon I will be upgrading my PC. Modern motherbords now come with about 6 Sata2 interfaces, but only one dual channel IDE.
Are new CD Roms etc now comming with Sata Interfaces?
Would I be better ditching my IDE cd/dvd devices for one with an Sata 2 interface?
Same here. I don't use anything else. I'm not sure if Nero supports blu-ray. My brother has had problems burning stuff onto blu-ray discs
Computers will carry the ATA/ATAPI interfaces for a long time, still. Unless you go specifically for motherboards without this interface, any generic board still have it -- and will for a long time since devices are still being built for this interface (CD/DVD players, tape drives). The standard is also by no means dying. It's still being developed and new proposals being discussed.
If you still have ATA/ATAPI CD-ROM players, use them. I see no reason to spend money on a SATA device, when in all honesty you will gain no advantage from it. Current ATA/ATAPI CD maximum speed is already excellent. Any gain would be negligible for most uses. The same doesn't hold however for hard drives or flash memory cards, for instance, where SATA does introduce many advantages in terms of speed, capacity and even hot swapping.
Great, a little saving for me then.
When my next pay packet comes in I'm planning on getting one of them AMD Phenom Quad Cores, maybe 3Ghz per core. I know the intel ones are slightly better but cost so much more. I'm not a a hardcore gamer, or a meteorologist so this should do me fine.
My current PC was built by me in 2003, with only extra memory and a new HD in the intervening time. So its about time. Though I'm allowed as many free copies of Vista for my machines as I need I will not let it near, I'm still gunna stay with XP and maybe try Linux again.
I really can't recommend it enough. The interface looks and feels like Nero, and it hasn't given me a duff burn yet, and I get through quite a few disks.
Well worth a look even if you eventually don't stick with it.
