Hip Replacement

edited February 2009 in Chit chat
I've been offered a ceramic on ceramic hip replacement and told to "go away and google it and get a list a questions". For a chap in his 30's it seems to be the best way to go. Has anyone got any suitable questions / advice that I can ask the consultant?

ask the consultant what are the most fequently asked questions.

What I know about hip replacements goes back to my Dads work on them in the early 80s so things have seen a huge improvement.

1: Bone wears out faster than stainless steel, titanium or ceramic materials

2: The adhesive used to attach the replacement into the femur used to fail (becasue the bone flexed while the implant didn't)

Cos you are having ceramic on ceramic 1 dosn't seem to apply.

Therefore I would ask about what the typical lifetime of the implant would be.

The consultant has already said he thinks ceramic on ceramic is my best choice for longevity but can't prove it as they have not been out long enough. The plastic ones do have a wear rate of about 0.1mm per year so they will loosen and dislocate, but it all depends on weight / lifestyle / original placement.

I wonder if glass would work?

Glass has the same problem as ceramic - it could shatter.

You, kind sir, stole my reply!!!

This consultant must be brand-spanking new if he/she has to have you scavenge for questions. There must be standardised pamphlets about these sort of operations readily available from the department this person works for/with ... that is if you went to a professional healtcare facility and not the shadier side of town.

Arr! Brain transplant? I be doin' them in me booze-induced sleep, yarr, and a where's my bottle
of rum gone off to? (inside the patient?!?!?!?!)

Whatever you decide to do, I do hope it all works out for you.

What about one made of titanium? That would last forever!

Titanium would be good, but they have to make a socket in the pelvis by shaving the bone, then they smooth it out with ceramic hence the ceramic on ceramic replacement. I don't think they can attach titanium or glass to the pelvis to make the socket.

The consulatant is a time served, not a newbit. The problem with the replacement for a chap in his 30's is that the surgery will need doing again at some point as the replacement works loose / breaks etc. He wanted me to research his suggestion to make sure I am happy with it.

Sounds like he wants you to do his job for him, ask him if he'll pay you 60k a year...

I'm not drilling into my own leg and chippping my pelvis to bits then ramming some metal rods into my bones! I think he wants me to make an informed choice rather than saying "this is what I am going to do, mortal!".

Any medical types around here with any info?
