Here's the list I'm forming with your advice. Its not fixed in my head yet, but this list does really shout Spectrum to me:

    Jet Set Willy
    Ant Attack
    Knight Lore
    Atic Atac
    Skool Daze
    Saboteur
    Turbo Esprit
    Deathchase
    Trashman
    Knot in 3D
    Worse Things Happen at Sea
    Manic Miner
    Lords of Midnight
    Tir na Nog
    Underwurlde
    Room 10
    Thanatos
    Redhawk
    Oracle's Cave
    Micronaut One
    Driller
    Stonkers
    The Alchemist
    Psytron
    Bugaboo

Wow, that's a list that would keep most people happy for a while. Here are some more suggestions which I didn't mention before but which I think might be included - I'm just not sure if they fit my own criteria:

Chaos, Scuba Dive, TLL, Halls of the Things, Krakatoa, Chuckie Egg, Juggernaut, Shockway Rider

Rather than TLL, I would say Cyclone. I know TLL was first but I think Cyclone is way more playable.

Mailstrom, I was never any good at it, it was hard, and I didn't really have any idea what I was doing as half the instructions were missing, but I've never seen a game with a homicidal postman since :D

Cosmic Wartoad, this game really is a love it or hate it type thing, I love it even though it is quite simple nowadays.

ATV Simulator, the first of it's kind AFAIK, and worth every penny of that 1.99

Pippo, paint the tile type game that was really good, and worth every penny of that 1.99 as well.
    Every night is curry night!

The top 25 list includes Stonkers. I agree because, apart from daily jokes about it, it had the great merit of being a 1983 real-time strategy game, maybe the first in any plattform? ...

Do I exaggerate if I say it's the precursor of games like Dune II, Warcraft or Command & Conquer?

Don't know how original it was on the spectrum or gaming world but Spellbound (1985) features "Window-vision", a sort of early windows driven menu to play the game.

Perhaps a little. It's borderline on the "playable" criteria as it's got some funny rules and the enemy AI isn't exactly taxing.

I'd think Nether Earth is another proto-RTS that's worth a shout; although there are also C64 and CPC versions that were developed at the same time, the Spectrum version is probably the pick of them.

How about One Man and His Droid (1985)? I played this quite a bit back then.

The author mentions it may of been an inspiration for Lemmings.

Interesting thought. It immediately made me remember Tribble Trubble which has a Lemmings-like protect-em quality about it (but no tribbles dig etc, just follow). I've never played OMAHD - perhaps I should?

I reckon Hive - With infinite lives. Very Very difficult otherwise. I know its a maze game but the scenario is really absorbing and original when you get into it.

Its a heide and infoseek maze - the essence of WoS and quite possibly the speccy too (I haven't played it though).

    EIGHTS

OK maybe not so original, but definitely playable, and quite addictive, and in Basic too!!!

Playing it at 2 x speed in Spectaculator it really comes into it's own if you like card games (which I usually don't).

I nominate Trap Door. A totally original 'cooking with monsters' gameplay coupled with the astonishingly large and colourful graphics.

To graphically similar to the earlier Don Priestley " Popeye " and the arcade adventure type game had been done before , collect this to put in that etc .

Therefore should Popeye be nominated instead ?

Just thought of another original classic - Wheelie .

I wouldn't rule it out, just because he didn't get it all spot on with the first game. It was still his original ideas. I think The Trap Door was the best of those games.

Wheelie certainly meets the criteria; I just don't think it was a particularly amazing game though.
