What's happened to Retro Gamer?

edited September 2009 in Chit chat
Retro Gamer's website is just returning the imagine publishing logo, and other addresses such as the forums all 404.

The magazine is still listed on Imagine's main site and subscription pages, but anything specific to the magazine has gone.

I subscribe to Retro Gamer and the latest edition with the white cover and Sega logs on arrived a couple of days ago. No mention of anything nasty occuring.

http://www.retrogamer.net/ seems to be working for me

Have you tried pressing Ctrl+F5 to completely reload the page? At that address I just get a white page with a blue ip logo in the middle of the screen and a link to www.imagine-publishing.co.uk. The title of the page says "Imagine Publishing Ltd - Under Construction".

I've been trying since last night, it literally went off inbetween posts. Darren the editor posts here, maybe someone could PM him in the hope he has email notification - might shed some light.

    Works for me.

Works for me too... Although it didn't work for a while yesterday... Then it did... Then it didn't again.

My guess would be a software upgrade gone slightly awry.

Very very strange. I still don't see it.
I wonder if it's a browser identity issue? I know at work the browser's user-agent is masked (in actual fact I think it uses a web spider's identity for some bizarre reason), so I'll try it with IE and Firefox when I get home.

I'm gonna have to make an effort to actually get hold of this months RG, I saw the cover on RR the other day. The Megadrive was pretty much My console after the Master system, I must get it!

    Website works for me too.

www.retrogamer.net is titsup for me as well.

The main site is fine and a couple of the other sub-sites work but the retro gamer site just gives the blue logo.

No big loss, its not a site I visit that much since there definition of "Retro" became "last week" and your getting more Xbox reviews than Speccy / C64 / anything more than 2 generations old.

Still like the mag though, just started on binder No 6 with the last issue.

The new Sega cover has just appeared on the site.

Hmm, I've got it back now. It's not the site I'm worried about so much as the subscription I've just taken out. The last magazine I had a paid-for subscription with was "ST Format", and where's that nowadays, I ask you??? :D

As for those self-propelled trip hazards posting my XBox collection as 'Retro Reviews', they need someone to point out that if your age ends in the letters 'E', 'E' and 'N', then you are not fit to judge what's retro. In fact, the game that mummy had to tease daddy away from scant hours before the prophylactic rupturing 'miracle' that gave your lonely soul a voice, that game's 'Retro' status is still on a knife edge, OK? I want a 'Retro' game to have data encoding it's unique levels that's older than that unique combination which encodes your entire oxygen-sinking genetic makeup, is that clear?

But otherwise, kiddies are most welcome on this forum, so gather round and have a game of Manic Miner. No, not the GBA version.

I stopped getting RG a while ago there was not much in it for me, apart from the Spectrum/SAM bits. They had never had a proper artical my much loved Jupiter Ace, if they wish to do one they can always get in contact with me, I have offered. The Jupiter Ace archive team are active in saving JA software (hint - if you find something not in the archive please let us know) we also have some new stuff coming out soon.

    Phew! well I guess I'm safe :D

The GBA Manic Miner is pretty bad, the new caverns aren't all that terrible it's the lack of new guardians and fire cells in them that puts me off. If you're going to add new caverns at least make some new enemies and traps to kill you. You can only re-use the MM robot so many times, and the poison pansy oh give me strength

the last mag ai had a sub to was a CD32 one, it only lasted 3 issues, then they told me it had folded and started sending me copies of an amiga mag, at the end of the year they refunded the entire ammonut i paid.

    best subcription i ever had.

He is right...the correct terminoligy to use if you fall in to this catagory is not 'retro' but 'old skool'

Oh yes, I have to use that. Off to the RG forums now...

Haven't taken to RG since it went into admin the first time.

I had just subscribed to it when it went kaput, got 3 'free' issues when it re-started but didn't like it as much.

Get the odd issue if I look the like of one when browsing in Smiffs, but thats it.

I haven't kept up with Retro Gamer since Live Publishing failed. The local Barnes and Noble carried the first few Imagine issues (but for the same $12 asking price as the Live Publishing issues, even without a cover disc) and then they didn't carry it anymore. The only place I can get it is a specialty magazine store in southeastern Massachusetts (that, even in this economy, is doing fantastic business) but that's still a long drive for a magazine that they still want $10 for.

Then again, thanks to the fact that America's premier video game magazine "Electronic Gaming Monthly" has ceased publication and the fact that Ziff Davis did not refund the remaining year left on my subscription (i've been subscribing to the magazine for 10 years and there wasn't even a goodbye issue for a successful magazine that was just about to celebrate 20 years of operation), i'm not risking getting into a magazine that might be canceled (or have its US distribution ceased) any day.

Well i've got every issue and still love it !

I much prefer the 'second' version myself. Yeah sometimes theres articles i'm not keen on etc but overall i think its a great mag, only mag which i've got into so much since Crash etc.

I got about a dozen of the early issues before they went into admin. All very good stuff.

Then for a while they veered away slightly from my own personal interests. They started to get more into obscure Japanese cart games etc.. All interesting stuff to some gamers I'm sure, but I'm much more into the home computers than the console stuff.

More recently I bought about three issues after the mag returned and I thought they were amongst the best editions ever, with more emphasis on the home computer games that I happen to be interested in.

I'm not one to buy it every month, but if there's a leading article I like I still will buy it it now and again.

I can fully understand the decision to not have a cover DVD any more, but I do miss that!
I liked trawling though it - it was a bit of an "aladdin's cave" of obscure games sometimes.

The site was down for me as well the past couple of days, in fact I even e-mailed Darran about it.
NO reply yet though, and he has replied to my (usually stoopid) questions before.

Both parts of the site are back working for me today !

Also, as for the mag, I live in a place called Calgary, Canada, and the local Chapters book stores usually get's it in, in fact I was having them reserve it for me, but it costs me $16.50 here + 5% tax ! and it's about 6 weeks behind the UK, not that that matter really, as it's mostly dealing with old computer stuff anyway ! but the price does suck, so you know I'll normally only buy it when the content is really good, but to be honest that's almost every issue anyway as I still prefer reading it to ANY of the north American gaming mags.
I do love my UK fix I suppose.

Retro gamer do have a very hard job to do to please everyone though, i mean some people wanted basic listings to type in (?), some people want the rarer retro machines in the mag. For me personally I dont want long indepth features on the Oric or Jupiter (Sorry Steve). The last few covers have been done i presume to try and get more readers, a Pacman cover, Megadrive and next month a Gameboy. Having an Oric on the front cover wont appeal to many new people, just a few hardcore retro fans.

A shame people buy it on/off though, i want RG to do well and survive for a long time so i get it every month. Again there are features i'm not so keen on but more often than not theres many i really like and the subscription cost is very cheap. They do a lot for the homebrew community also with reviews etc so again another reason for me to support it. Be a total shame if RG ever stopped.

I think Retrogamer does a fairly good job, but they need to start covering other stuff...

They keep interviewing the same people...Jon Ritman's been in it a few times for example..although I do understand retro-type folks might be hard to find. And also a couple of games have been looked at 3 times or more.....

It needs to start covering "newer" retro stuff as well..I mean it's now 15 years since the PS1 was released, and 13 since the N64 was, so more looks at this era would be welcomed by folks like me...and also help it to survive while it covers the older stuff, as it will be bought by the next group o' retro folks..

(Feck! I just made myself feel really old....there are people in High School who weren't alive when Resident Evil came out.....)

Naah, retro has 8 bits only, I wouldn't include anything after 1989...

But you are limiting your options then arent you ? I would love issues to be 8 bit only but long term they cant really do that. Did love the speccy special a while back though !

N64/PS1 i wouldnt mind, just not a fan of all these Wii/I-Phone/X-Box 360 type remakes.
