I never saw the original version on sale. I got the one with the Manic Miner special, but I was gutted I missed the Zelda special. While flying out on holiday last year I was pleasantly surprised to get it from the lounge-side WHSmiths at Gatwick. I took out a subscription a few months ago.
What I like is reading up on what was happening on the C64 and Amstrad whilst I was reading Your Sinclair. I know there were a few awful C64 and Amstrad to Spectrum conversions that had those wide-pixel graphics brought over (Mr Heli, Leviathan, Challenge of the Gobots) but I had no idea how much Amstrad owners had to suffer with slow monochrome Spectrum ports.
It's the one magazine where I really do read every article. I could probably stand to see some PlayStation / N64 stuff (the recent article in EDGE was interesting), even though I remember all that as it happened from EDGE at the time; but its the kiddies posting HALO and Call of Duty on the website for Retro reviews that piss me off, and the mods for letting it happen. They seem to have taken over the forum too. I think I'll just stay with the printed form.
I love call of duty but i wouldnt expect it to be in the mag, yeah the original might be '7 years old' but to me thats not retro. Theres still a huge host of games to be covered from the 80's and 90's.
I always feel there should be more MAME stuff, i've got 4000 roms on my machine but just go for the 'popular' names half the time i know of. A guide to say 20 of the unknown/underated MAME games would be good.
I reckon most people have MAME on their machines if theyre into retro gaming.
Some flashbacks would be quite good, eg not print 3 pages of BASIC listing but a look back at when type in mags were all the rage etc. Still love the look back at the months in the 80's and 90's which bring back many memories
I think Retro Gamer is great - I bought all the issues I could find, before the bankrupcy (or whatever it was) and every issue since it came back, except for one issue (the one with Mr Do! in it, ironically, since I love Mr Do!) which I couldn't find anywhere. For the last year or two I've had a subscription to it, and apart from Micro-Mart, it's the only magazine I still buy.
And regarding interviews and stuff, there must be countless people they could interview, not just '80s and '90s programmers, games designers, graphic artists etc, but also the writers from the '80s and '90s magazines (just the Speccy magazines alone, Crash/Your Spectrum/Your Sinclair, and Sinclair User) provides lots of well known (to us Speccy fans of the '80s) names who might want to be interviewed. The same for the magzines dedicated to other machines.
I'd love to be able to get retro gamer here, but the Barnes and Noble here won't get it anymore....cunts!
I've tried to order it, but they said they only used to get 4 copies, and they'd sell 1 maybe 2 of them. I even asked if I could buy back issues from them but they say they send em' back or something?
Bellends!
I really want this months with the Megadrive stuff in it though :(

You could always ask me to get it and mail it too you...
My B&N carries it...of course its always a month behind....this one isn't in the store till around April 11th. $12 with tax and then the shipping on top. PM me if you want me to get it when I get mine.
Cheers matey may just do that, have to square it with the missus since I'll probably use her paypal (I still haven't set my own up yet), as I don't like sending the old "Pie n' Mash" in the mail :D

I'll second that. When RG first came out, it had loads of features on emulators and how to get them running etc, but now nothing. OK, I can understand the legal side of ROM usage etc, but it wold be nice if they would do an indepth feature on MAME or another emulatro. Like it or not, emulation is a massive part of retro gaming these days (I still dig out my Megadrive etc every once in a while, but most of my retro fix is by emulation these days).
It was RG that got me into emulation in the first place and I think that they should return to running features dedicated to some of the more popular emulators and how they came into being.
At the end of the day they have to go with what sells magazines. I think the audience for NES/SNES/Megadrive etc is going to be bigger than the audience for Speccy/C64 etc.
...if you remember the early days of the mag that seemed to focus more on the 8bit/emulator stuff......ended not so well.

Dont get me wrong i love the Speccy stuff, just seeing the two page Sir Lancelot picture the other month made me smile a ton. But they have to do what sells magazines, Amiga/Megadrive/MAME i hope to see more of.

Totally agree. Retro Gamer is around due to the huge interest in emulation, not the smaller group of people who still use their old machines (But granted its also gone the other way and emulator fans are now buying older machines). So many people who buy Retro Gamer must use emulators and roms etc.
Its cool the mag is still doing well, issue 62 ! Very impressive for a mag which isnt exactly mainstream. Small YS issue in the past, Olli Frey covers, seeing Speccy games in a mag in 2009 in WHSmiths, i think its all good and want to carry on supporting it.
Slightly off topic, what I find interesting is the Barnes and Noble by my house gets about 6 copies...and they all sell out within a couple days so I have to get there pretty much the same day they put it on the shelf to secure a copy.
Always curious about the other 5 people in the depths of Texas and by my house who are eagerly awaiting its arrival.

I was curious who was buying the 4 copies or whatever from the one near me.
I'm aware because of my missus and her pissy forums that there's another limey moving somewhere near me, to marry some cunt who lives just a state over. So I'm no doubt gonna have to suffer this brummie prick and pretend I like him on the say so of the missus.
Oh I can't wait, hopefully he'll be cool, and not some nob,but if he buys an RG from under my nose there'll be a US based Brit brawl, and I don't care, I'll merk the fucker!

i bet he's saying. 'theres a geordie who i'm gonna have to meet, i bet he's a violent drunkard'
..I mean it's now 15 years since the PS1 was released, and 13 since the N64 was, so more looks at this era would be welcomed by folks like me...a.....)
Agreed.
Anything over 2 system gens or is retro in my mind.
Anyhoo, I've got Issue 2,3,4 with relevant CDs. (5-9 have been nicked I think..or lost to me) Um...they don't seem to appear on Ebay..especially 2 and 3 (Issue 1 we know about of course). Anybody got an idea if they are worth putting on Ebay..I mean I'm not gonna put them on if the value is dropped to crap. Anybody?
