wow, I?m unique... at least so far no one mentioned magical-easy combination
W - S - U - I - B
that?s for QAOPM/QAOPSpace - just the same,
I?ve been using it after the keys Q, O and P got overpressed due to heavy use in few years and stopped working as they used to :(
still using it now on any game
(imagine the trouble of non-ability to write the tokens for basic programming!!! )
There was a similar discussion on the BBC Forum and my choice of QAOP was not the popular choice. It was something like Z X ; / or whatever keys they have down in that corner.
I don't understand how anyone can deal with 56789 type 'linear' layouts. extremely confusing for the brain, spoils the game (as someone already pointed out)...
How about cursor 5678 and 0? I always found that easier than Sinclair.
Cursor keys and Z, X, and C for motion and various action controls respectively. I never could understand why anyone would use QAOP; you need two hands to control one character.
In fact, I used it so much in the "speccy days" in late 80s and early 90s, that when I started to use Spectrum emulators on PC (in 2000) I used too, and played every game exactly the same as 10 years before.
i started with Q,A,O,P,M but as keyboard of my little lovely (and crappy) DIDAKTIK M became less reliable i moved keys more to center of keyboard.
if i remember well, i finished with E,D,U,I,B
I had a 48k+ and later on a +3. My layout of choice was always Q,A,O,P and Space. With enter as either pause or secondary weapon.
Thinking about it, I have no idea know how or why this layout ended up being so popular for people. Maybe it was the default in some of the early games?
Everyone in my family used that configuration except one of my brothers, who preferred:
Left: O Right: P Up: Q Down: A Fire: N (sometimes "Space")
Never understood that one haha.
It's ergonomically sound for right handed people, but after a few hours I felt the strain in both hands many a time. I'm almost ambidextrous anyway. I say almost because there's still a few things I can't do with both hands, certain things I prefer to use my left or right for.

I'm right handed, but pick my nose with my left. I think this has its basis in Eastern culture. But I am wrong.
And I wear boxing gloves for the pervy stuff - either hand, it matters not.
Personally I always have been and always will be a 'cursor' key man. If I couldn't use 'em I redefine the keys that way. If a game wouldn't allow that I'd go for RTYU AND O as a best match.

R Type writing terror!
On the Vic-20 it was commonly Z X P L.

A
O
P
Space/M (for the games when Space did something else)
and H for pause....
My preferred is IF2: 67890.
But cursor keys are my original set 56780.
If it is an early Ultimate game (Atic Atak) then it is QWERT+SYM

PS I forgive you for using 67890 :-)
WAIT! Surely you mean 5678 and 0??????????? (that's IF2, right?)
No that's cursors.
Q up
A down
K left
L right
J fire
S second fire
Y pause
U quit
if i remember well, i finished with E,D,U,I,B
a-left
s-right
i-up
j-down
o-fire
Must admit now just to make it easier i play most games as interface ii - 67890
A = Down
O = Left
P = Right
Space Bar = Fire
Boy, my space bar took some hammering!!!

and 'M' for bombs, logic
Right: X
Up: K
Down: M
Fire: Space

I know BBC players prefer Z X M K and L or RETURN to fire, but Speccy players use Q A O P and M to fire. Or "The Spread" - Q Z I P and M or N to fire.
EDIT - I use to hate the Ultimate games that used QWERT. Knackers!
The wonder and glory of redefinable keys!

QWERT
so Ultimate didn't set a standard there (scans faster but nobody pressed them in the right order)
me Q A , O P , M (space on +)
EDIT - Frobush beat me by 3 min's
That'll be the boxing gloves!
Practice!
