2W90M. It's a bit like QAOPM, but with a bit more room to get your hands over the keyboard.
Hi Jonathan. Sorry for slowing you down the other week!
I remember at Special FX going out to a specialist hardware shop and buying up all their Speccy keyboard membranes - 'cos we use to go through them like you wouldn't believe!
In fact - I gave a broken (?) rubber keyed Speccy to JMK at one point (it was Karen Davies' - a famous Denton and SPFX artist), and it turned out that all that was wrong with it was that the membrane wasn't plugged into the circuit board! D'oh! And he's got my fuller box too!
Give them back! You sod! If you haven't eBayed them!
so Ultimate didn't set a standard there (scans faster but nobody pressed them in the right order)
I had no trouble with this setup at all. It was the same layout as the sinclair joystick keys 12345 or 67890), and I still play many PC games with this setup today.

True. But we are talking a few T-States here! And not all Ultimate games had that setup.
Luna Jetman had alternate keys on the botttom row for left/right - all the keys above these for jet boost - and all the keys above these for fire! And symbol shift/capshift for pick up/drop bridging planks and space for entering/exiting the rover!
I use Real Spectrum emulator and I usually use the cursor keys and right Shift as a Kempston Joystick, but in Renegade aтв Target: Renegade I use q for up, a for down, o for left, p for right, Spacebar for fire and h for pausing the game.
Hi Jonathan. Sorry for slowing you down the other week!
you were giving him a good ribbing about nicking your ideas, it was good to meet yer tho'
You should do a master class on game routines (colour scrolling, sprite masking etc), or write a book on games programming for the speccy now that's something I'd pay good money for!

Did I? LOL! I don't think he stolen any of my ideas! Or needed to! Well, perhaps byte-scan, to stop flickering graphics. But I only ever used for one game myself! I found it better to just beat the raster! Oops! Maybe he'll do that now! Joking!

It's a deal!
No, if anyone wants me to spout my crap then just ask!
I'll probably tell you where to go, but there's no harm in asking! I have a gun.
I notice most of you seemed to prefer capital letters too - things like: QAOPM
That must have made the games even harder to play having to hold caps-shift down too
"I should use simulator loosely 'cos I don't think it's quite like this on the beach with helicopters and fires and the jumping beach buggy" - paulisthebest3uk 2020.
There's a reason for this. Back when I had a Spectrum + the "P" key broke which meant that I couldn't use O and P for left and right so had to use something else and settled on K and L. Later one of those went and I had to use G and H (with V for fire!). I got the keyboard membrane replaced and all was well again but I stuck with QAKLM and still do to this very day.
this is the pre-set for a lot of games anyway, yeah? not having a go, I'm just saying...
Yes. This was my biggest problem.
I always prerferred
Z left
X right
K up
M down
Fire depended which speccy I was on but I could never get on with
QAOP - at least the QA was very uncomfortable and I had to twist the keyboard around about 40? and then get used to the idea that my hands were on the wrong arms.

1 - Up
Q - Down
O - Left
P - Right
SPACE - Fire
Sometimes I used 9 & 0 for Left and Right (because I've got fairly large hands) but always SPACE so I could use the thumb to fire.
I had no trouble with this setup at all. It was the same layout as the sinclair joystick keys 12345 or 67890), and I still play many PC games with this setup today.

It was always the symbol shift key that went on mine. Now THAT knackers you up!

M
10 charaters extra needed to spoil the joke. PLER DINK!
Space key on 48 was far away from my thumb, 48+ space was so dodgy while playing.
