HELP! Problem with thumbnails

edited April 2009 in Chit chat
I have some video files in a folder. They are mpg files. I see them in 'thumbnail' mode: little pictures of each file.
But one of them is not in this mode, it shows the Windows media player icon. It's a mpg file, like the others.

This file works OK. Why doesn't show the corresponding Thumbnail? Something wrong?

The simple answer is that there is more than one type of MPG, and it depends if Windows can produce a thumbnail using the codec compatible with the file. If it can't, it just shows the player icon.

But if Windows can play the file (it works in Windows Media Player, Real Player, etc.) I can suppose Windows have the corresponding codec...

Windows may be able to play it, but not create a thumbnail. Depends on the codec used.

I *think* a codec works like a plug in...when a certain type of 'mpg is used it takes over...(even though its playing it in media player)...a bit like flash and your browser...if you don't have the plug in it doesn't work....

In this case Media player has the plugin (codec) but windows explorer (which is the one displaying the thumbnail) doesn't.

The thumbnail is stored automatically with the MPG file data - but if, I assume, the file was created on an old utility it may not store that info.
