OutRun Online Arcade

edited April 2009 in Chit chat
Downloaded it for my PS3 last night (it's also on Xbox Marketplace).

It's really good, obviously not as good as the original (it's more Coast to Coast than original OutRun), but for your money you get the 15 "tracks", online leaderboards, online multiplayer, trophies/achievements, heart mode (?), and all for the price of a full-price Speccy game in the 80's (?7.99).

Recommended.

Sounds like Outrunners on the Megadrive/Genesis.

It's not a bad game, but it's not outrun, but it did let you have 2 players. I can't remember now if this game still used sprites to simulate scaling (since the Megadrive didn't have MODE 7) or if the late release in the Megadrives life meant the cart had the chips in it to allow scaling?

...anyway slightly OT, but also slightly related :D

OutRun 2006 Coast To Coast on the XBox was utterly brilliant. I did love how the 3-D scenery would squash down and pop-up again as you changed routes, which was a bit cheeky, but all the extra game modes were a lot of fun.

Shame that they didn't release it first though, or at least let you join in the regular OutRun 2 lobby, as you could rarely get an on-line game.

Was OutRunners the one with the giant roller-coaster track done as scaling sprites, that you drive under?

Agreed. I've already dowloaded the 360 version from Xbox Live Arcade. I've always been a big Outrun fan and have stuck with the series for years, even after being disappointed by the port of the original and then the horrific Outrun Europa on the Speccy (Turbo Outrun wasn't too bad...).

I only wish they'd included the original Outrun 2 tracks in the download as well as the SP ones, as they were all included in Outrun 2006 on the original Xbox, but it's still a great game for the price. :)

Sounds like Power Drift to me.

I meant drive under the roller coaster, not over it!

The original OutRun used a small scrolling horizon image and repeating scaling trees and roadsigns at the roadside, or at the most a row of stone liths that bridged the road.
One of the later OutRun arcade games used to have occasional big sprite objects that would appear on the horizon and grow very gradually, then after a while they'd rapidly get bigger and you'd find yourself driving past or under them. One of these objects was a cathedral, another was a fun park with a big roller coaster over the road - although these might have been from two different OutRun sequels.

According to Gamecentral, the 2006 Outrun game for the original Xbox works fine on the 360, you may be able to pick that up cheap if you aren't bothered about achievements.

It does work on the 360 (I've got it, as well as the original Xbox version of Outrun 2) but the loading times are horrible (when running an orignal Xbox game, the 360 won't cache data from it like an original Xbox console will), it's prone to crashing and.....whilst it's not enough to ruin the game....the framerate does noticeably drop at times.

In general, the original Xbox emulation on the 360 is crap, that's just my opinion though.

I've not had many problems with playing Outrun 2 on the 360...and as I am exceptionally skint at the moment, it is that I shall have to play...

Downloaded the demo for this one though at it does seem to go a lot faster....

Worst problems I've had with it have been in between the menus and starting a race....I've had it take just over a minute to load before, and also sometimes it'll just freeze up.....if the actual game loads in OK though, you should be OK. And the orignal Xbox/PS2 version has got WAY more extras on it in the way of game modes, unlockable stuff, etc. than the dowloadable version has.

As good as it is, the downloadable version is pretty much just the bare bones arcade version of Outrun 2 SP with nicer looking graphics....

I have both versions of outrun for the original Xbox (outrun 2 and coast 2 coast).

I find that Outrun 2 runs noticeably worse on the Xbox 360 than coast 2 coast does - There is a lot of frame rate dropping and the loading times are pretty bad (sometimes it chugs between areas)

I find outrun coast 2 coast runs okay on the 360 - I think they have simplified the graphics filtering or something because the game is missing a little detail to how I remember it on the original Xbox.

This actually cleans the look of the game up a little though as it was not a good looking xbox game at the time (the graphics were worse than outrun 2 - probably due to the online code that was added to it).

I downloaded the demo - but don't think I'll be paying for this one unless they release some new tracks. I think there is a slight graphical improvement but if i'm driving slowly enough to notice it I won't get to the checkpoint on time...

I downloaded this yesterday and I think it's great. When I first played OutRun2SP, I wasn't too impressed as I prefered the original OutRun2 tracks, but playing it on a big telly with proper controlls (I only played it on the PSP before), I'm having much more fun.

Give it a bit of time and I've no doubt we'll all be able to download the original Outrun 2 tracks on xBox Live and PSN (for a fee of course).

The last (TV)console game I bought was Outrun2. It was well worth the wait(I just wish it had been on Sega hardware at home :( ) - the only 2 outruns that passed all the quality checks for me are Outrun(Arcade) and Outrun2(Arcade/XBOX). All the others just didn't quite do it for me(some missed by miles). Basically - I suffer with Outrun snobbery or something.

One thing I've missed out on......2006 - coast to coast......looks amazing......is it the same standard of "beautiful journey" that Outrun and Outrun2 were/are?? I think I need to buy it anyway just in case it is.....

Yeah, Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast is a great game, has a really good Challenge mode system on it as well, and all the original Outrun 2 tracks alongside the newer SP ones.

The only thing I did feel with it was that the handling was a bit more 'slippery' compared to the first Outrun 2 release. Not in a way that ruins the game (not at all) but if you've played Outrun 2 to death like I did, then it takes a little getting used to at first.

I find Outrun2 and Outrun2SP as the most "loyal" reincarnation of an original arcade franchise ever.
And their console conversion to the original xbox were great.
Unfortunately in 360 compatibility mode, there are plenty of lost/torn frames (mainly in the long turns).

I think the particular download (although there are ommision but what the heck,we have HD content and half the actual size compared to the original! ) essential...
