Come on polomint, surprise us all and say you support a local team to you ! Not any of this 'I support xxxxx' who are 50 miles away type of thing !
That's what I never understood. Loads of people here claim to support Man Utd, Newcastle or whatever and yet have most likely never been anywhere near their respective cities in their lives. If you're going to follow a team, you should at least have some geographical connection to them.
Of course, I have zero interest in football, apart from cheering for Ireland in the world cup for example. I prefer rugby. It's a far more interesting game. *gets ready for the flaming* :)
Totally agree, at least support a team you have some ties with, a local one, one you go to its pubs and shop at type of thing.
Usual case of wanting to support only a premiership team and a successful one. I support Reading, finally reached the top flight in i think it was their 104th year, only 2 years at the top but it was brilliant after all those seasons on damp tuesday nights watching Reading vs Hartlepool etc back in Div 2 or 3.
I do. Born in West Bromwich and supported the Baggies all me life.
To be fair, a massive percentage of the footie supporters I know support their local team. I can't think of anyone where I live (Wolverhampton) that doesn't support the Wolves, and Dudley was always a third each of Wolves, Villa and The Baggies.
Heheh, yep. Used to live there when I was *very* young, and a neighbour got me into footy.,. Since then, I've always supported them.. Had season ticket for 86/87/88, used to love going to the matches.. :D
I don't live so far away now, so I may try to start getting back to the matches again, :)
Vampyre: Apologies for sending you down.. I felt bad for that.. :(
There's a fella who works in the produce department at work, usually comes in around 6am stopped me by one of the bailers a week or 2 back and started asking me if I watched footy, I pointed to one of the booze depts pallets that was sitting there and said look at the blue star on those brown ale bottles, and to my surprise he said "So you're Newcastle supporter?". Turns out he had a mucker from down south who supported Chelsea or something?
So he knew a bit about Footy or Soccer as our yankee cousins so lovingly call it.
Asked me if I ever watched the US games to which I replied I watched Beckhams farcical first game with LA Galaxy, and that put me off for life :D

No problem - I won't hold it against ya ;-) It's a 38 match season so the damage had been done long before. Shame really; we play some decent stuff but we need that 15+ goal a season striker to put the chances away. If we had I think we could have managed mid-table.
Felt sorry that you didn't win the title - Ive' always had a soft spot for the 'pool. It's a shame that the Rafa-rant coincided with the dip in form that had had all those home draws. If you'd have won them (which you should have really) we'd be talking about Liverpool being champions or at least it going down to the last couple of games.
Hopefully Newcastle go down with us and 'boro. I like Shearer (and previously liked Newcastle) but the toon fans have really pissed me off this season. They're forever bleating on about how they're the best fans in the world, but they're so blinkered they couldn't see that Keegan was a hiding to nothing. He was always gonna walk away like a told-off school kid at some point and it didn't take long. They're so hard done by - a sugar daddy billionaire gets them out of the shit, pumps more money in, and they're still not happy. Relegation will give them the reality-check they sorely need.

what american football team do you support again? is it the reading raiders? :-D
i don't see it as a problem to support a team that you have no ties to. i watch formula one, and i don't think i have any ties to a particular driver or team.
and as football goes, i would naturally have to support huddersfield town, but its not the same as watching a decent game of football. i'm pertty much equi distant from leeds and manchester, but if i supported manchester i'd be called a glory hunter, and if i supported leeds i'd be called a wanker.

Too true, unfortunately. I keep trying to get people to realise it's just a feckin game at the end of the day.. For clubs, its a business, but for fans its a game....
I have no axe to grind with Liverpool fans in particular, but there is an element of hypocrisy within a part of their fan base at the moment.
I work in an office in Greater Manchester, we get a good mix of fans from different north-west clubs.
When someone says they are a fan of Manchester United, the immediate response (and I have to say it is mainly from Liverpool fans) is that of "Oh you're a glory hunter are you?" - but none of these Liverpool fans have a scouse accent and, on further questioning, no connection to Liverpool apart from they may have gone to a few games at Anfield/owned a Beatles album. Further to this, the majority of people in my office are the age range of mid-30s to late 40s. I myself am in my early 30's. So we all grew up in the late 70's and 80's - strangely enough when Liverpool were at their most dominant.
In fact when I asked one of the Liverpool fans here, who comes from Wigan, why he supported Liverpool his answer was that he had no family connection to Liverpool and never came from Liverpool...but they were his favourite team as a kid. This seems to be the common theme with most of the non-Liverpudlian Liverpool supporters I work with.
Certainly in my experience, a lot of the Liverpool fans calling Manchester United supporters "glory hunters" seem to be forgetting why they chose to support Liverpool in the first place themselves. They accuse the Manchester United fans of "glory hunting" whilst conveniently forgetting that when they "chose" Liverpool as their club in the 70' and 80's, Liverpool was the unstoppable football machine of the era.
Rewind 20-25 years and it was Manchester United fans (suffering the Big Ron years) who were calling Liverpool supporters "glory hunters" in playgrounds up and down the country!
Give it another 25 years and we might all be calling Tottenham fans "glory hunters"...

Yeah good point, i've stuck through that team thick and thin though the last 20 years, many of which have been bad. Currently the New England Patriots are the best team the last 5 or so years and 'surprise surprise' theres tons of those fans now when 20 years ago when they were rubbish no one would wear their colours due to embarassment.
To be fair 'if' Leeds won the premiership in a few years time you'll get the 'where were you when Leeds were in div 1 ?' etc
I find it much more satisfying supporting a team through crap years (Reading) and then when they do reach the pinnacle of making the premier league its so much more satisfying.
Just that people seem like they HAVE to support a team whos winning, regardless of location. American footballs a bit different, but living in the UK and near quite a few footy teams, people still ignore their local side and go for the big gloryhunting team

That reminds of the Wolves fans of twenty-odd years ago just before they nicked Steve Bull off us and were languishing at virtually the bottom of what was the 4th Division. If everyone Wolves fan who says they went to those matches in that period had actually turned up, they would have had gates of 30,000 plus, not 3,000!!!

Torn who i want to win the champions league, think i'll go for Barcelona despite that dodgy referering the other week.

Colne FC (pmsl)
I gather from all my years worth of education that that answer is a no then ?
