If it is chipped or soft modded then it will be able to read CDRs. Nintendo Wii is where it is at though for Spectrum emulation on a home console. It is easier to get things working on it too, and you don't need to burn any CDs as you do it all with SD cards.

All PS2 can play CDs, and no PS2 can play your CDs.

PS2 have a DVD/CD reader, and some retail games are in fact CDs. But PS2 have some protections that prevents booting from pirate or homebrew discs.

With original "fatty" PS2, a PS1 disc and a hacked memcard, you can boot non original discs without modifying the console itself. With "thin" PS2 that bug is corrected, so you must hack your PS2 to play these discs.
    I was there, too
An' you know what they said?
Well, some of it was true!

There are some "hacks" involving "fatty" PS2. This is the fatty PS2, the later models are "slim" ones.

The best part about having a fatty PS2 is that you can mount a hard disk inside. You will need a network adaptor, because it has the IDE BUS. Once you have a hard disk inside, you can do some funny things, like copying your discs to the hard disk (and avoid playing with the original discs inside the drive). Note that most games (GTA is a very good example) will load much faster.

The other part is the memory card exploit. There is an interesting article... in the wikipedia.

How it works: when you load a PS1 original disc, PS2 tries to get some data from a special file in the memcards. In older PS2s, there is a bug that can be exploited, so a malformed version of that file can boot apps from the memory card.

Some people uses a "loader", so they can eject the PS1 disc, put the non original disc and then boot that disc. Other people boots HDLoader, the program used to boot games from hard disc.

Note that you will need (basic setup):
    - Your fatty PS2.
    - Any memory card.
    - An original PS1 disc.

For the advanced setup (a.k.a.: hard disk loading):
    - All of the above things.
    - A PS2 network adapter.
    - A IDE hard disk (between 40 and 120Gb, but be careful about compatibility).

The bad news... getting that special files into the memcard may be complicated. There are only two methods: using a memcard-to-pc converter, or using an already hacked PS2 to do the work :( Maybe you could find a friend with a hacked PS2 that could help you.

I've tried that exploit and it works. There is another exploit (as it is said in wikipedia) that might work and it does work in slim PS2 and doesn't need a PS1 disc. I haven't tried that (but I will do in a friend PS2, mine is chipped).

About the wii... Softmii is the key to get alternative software loaded. Note that it needs an original Zelda: Twilight Princess and some firmware versions to work (below 3.4), so if your wii is updated it won't work (but they're working on it).

    ah
    well i do have
    a fatty
    a memory card
and tons of ps1 games :)

but getting the file onto the card does sound like the problem :(
i dont have a memory card to pc convertor, and i dont think i know anybody with a hacked ps2 :(

wii wise.........ours as far as ai know hasnt been updated at all, we aint had it long, its not online...........so unless a game discs done it without us knowing?
