Aspartame? Good?? Bad???

edited June 2009 in Chit chat
Just got this sent in an e-mail. Don't know if it's true or not so I'd like to hear your Expert WoS-Opining on it.

""Aspartame contains METHANOL, a serious metabolic poison. Your body converts it to formaldehyde (embalming fluid) and formic acid (ant sting poison) both of which attack your central nervous system and every organ of your body.""

Doesn't Aspartame just make you sh*t?

Not make you a sh*t person, we'll take that as fact, just make you pooh?

    Laxative!

    Me? Personally? Pooh? Winnie? the?

Nah, but I've felt like it kinda sorta works like a diuretic on me.

Good. Being a diabetic I'd be pretty much fucked eating sugar instead.

Formic acid? That must be what the big bastard ants at the bottom of the works car park are packing. I mean, these are the big red wood ants with black armour plates on their bodies. I've never seen ones this big before. I park at the other end as I don't want them swarming into my car, or carrying it off if I forget me crystal skull one day.

    FFS.

There is loads more aspartame in your average Sunday roast, or a pint of milk than there is in anything like 2 litres of pepsi max.

We've done this flame war to death.

top tip: Asda's aspartame and sugar free cola is suprisingly decent.
  • edited June 2009
Gah. Aspartame is perfectly safe. I suspect it's probably come up again because Hugo Ch?vez is in the news (or at least his government) because they banned Coca Cola Zero for containing substances damaging to health. However, everything that Ch?vez does must be seen in the light of wanting to beat the United States or anything associated with the United States with a stick to further his anti-American political agenda.

Of course, any drink containing aspartame tastes utterly rank (it tastes nothing like sugar, and I find "diet" drinks leave me feeling more thirsty than before...) but this is an entirely different matter.

I wouldn't say it's "perfectly safe", no chemicals are perfectly safe including anything naturally occurring in food. However you can say that there is no significant health risks associated with consuming it.

I almost laughed myself sick at the VB section of one of those threads.

/me goes back to proving that I couldn't afford a lethal dose of aspartame on my wages (via diet cola)

Something vile is happening to supermarket diet colas. It started with Morrisons and it's spread to Tesco. Same awful taste. ASDA seems to be the last one left drinkable. Although Tesco's diet cola with Almond is quite marvellous.

Never liked Diet Coke but do like Coke Zero. I'm addicted to 'Jolt', Tescos own cheap brand of red bull, very cheap for a large bottle (think its 2 for a quid), love the taste of it. Been drinking loads of it recently

I really miss Jolt Cola, real sugar & caffeine and a decent cola taste (I see production has restarted and there is a UK distributor).

The problem I have with the almond flavoured colas is they can only really be called "almond odour cola" taste more like cherry to me and I hate cherries. I think vanilla goes much better with cola.

Hmmm vanilla flavoured Absolut & cola, literally the only way I can drink vodka.
