The few seconds of silence at the end of the cd... I love the Beatles but all the solo stuff the various members did afterwards is complete wank. Sorry.

You mean you didn't like Macca's "New York - Fuck Yeah!"? (or whatever it was called...)
oh, and the Coming Up video, where Macca & Linda impersonate various famous musicians (including himself, lol) - some are easy, (Hank! Ron Mael) some are difficult. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dr8x8rh4yws
I have always liked Coming Up. Here is a YouTube link which is supposedly a remix but it sounds the same as the original to me but has Lennon talking at the beginning: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bJBLNHZg6Q
Since no one has said "Yesterday", then I take it that means that you don't consider Yesterday to be a solo song (since I think it's his best ever song, and a good candidate for the best song ever).
But didn't he literally dream up the song? Or did he have help with the released version, from Lennon or whoever?
Anyway, if Yesterday is allowed, then I'll definately say that. Otherwise, I'll probably say Mull of Kintyre or Pipes of Peace.

????? What about Lennon's Woman, So This is Christmas, Just Like Starting Over, or the superlative Imagine (another candidate for the best song ever)?
Edit: And who hasn't felt exactly the feelings behind Yesterday? The loss, the confusion, the fear of going on with the world seeming colder and emptier. It's a simple song, and forty plus years old, but it captures the feeling of a broken heart so well.
I like Maybe i'm amazed, Live and let die and Band on the run.
His Flaming Pie album was the best for a long time, i've not heard much off his last couple of albums though.
His worst was C moon or that stupid Coming up.

he dreamt the melody, then it took him a year or so to find the right words.
then george martin suggested to arrange it with a string quartet - martin did most of the arrangement work, with bits by paul.
no other beatle has contributed, in anyway. john, george & ringo didn't even play in it.
about the solo careers of the fab four: i think there are good songs and good albums by each one of them (ringo has one or two good tunes too).
good albums by paul: mccartney, ram, band on the run, venus and mars, flowers in the dirt, chaos and creation in the backyard.
george: all things must pass, george harrison, cloud nine.

Distractions from Flowers in the Dirt is quite good.
However, my favourite is here today from the album Tug of War.

Best album, probably Pipes of Peace.

What he said.
Plus Pipes of Peace.

john: plastic ono band, imagine, walls & bridges.
it was his last single to enter the english top ten.
My favourite Macca solo song is Live and Let Die, and as for unknown ones, Waterfalls was a nice ballad from about 1980.
