Oh no my monitor is dying :(

edited June 2009 in Chit chat
I have a SyncMaster 700p Plus.

It has intermittent frame collapse.

A moments silence please.

Currently I can get away with a whack on the side but that will only last so long.

Sigh...

Do I go for a new monitor or do I get this repaired?

Any suggestions for a new one?

I need to see colours properly.

    Stop taking acid then :p

....but seriously take it to an independent PC broker, to see if it's worth fixing. Smaller places usually tell you the truth as to weither or not there's any point in getting it mended.

Well that's what I would do anyway.

I have a 19" SyncMaster ... recommend them, wonderful things they are.

Aha! I have the exact same problem on my SyncMaster. I would have bought a new one but unfortunately my PC has died too. So I'm just sitting around wondering what system I should buy without burning too large a hole in my wallet.

My desktop monitor has been dying for about 3 years now. Every time I switch it on, it goes,

    Skreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek.

Up until it sets the screen resolution to 640x760 (wow, that much eh?) then it quietens itself down.

May buy a new one when it goes pop. Then again...

If a whack on the side restores it, it's probably a bad connection/bad solder joint/oxidised connector and eminently fixable.

hehe, you also have eyesight problems ?

It often happens to me too that I read something different than there is written and I make up a word suitable for me...

He guys, I have also read it that way :o

It must be some psychological effect. You would rather expect to see "mother" in such a dramatic context, so when you see mo... you don't read further.

It's creeping me out, my mother is dieing or may as well be she's a slave to the drink now, and just counting her days from the sounds of things. :(

Talking of which I should phone her and make sure she's still alive.

The green side of me says repair it.

However, flat screens are much better these days than they used to be, and will give you more desk space.

Winston what uses less power a 19" TFT or a 19" CRT?

Me too - Interesting so many people read it like that. I can barely see the monitor at the moment though and didn't so much read it - more like glanced at it.

So will a 24" Wide screen TFT. The one on my office desk puts out almost as much heat out the back vents as a radiator.

Also, I would keep the crt for as long as possible. By the time it finally goes knackered, LCD technology may be really really good! Surely it improves yr by yr!

yes but no but yes but no ...

Yes it could be simple it could be a loose cable it could be a dry joint.

No the amount of stored energy in the back of these is quite scary and it can stay charge for weeks.

It would be my preferred option but I'm not gonne do it myself and the prices seem to start at ?30 which is a fair old chunk of a new monitor.

Just so, whenever I buy anything it's 20% off next week, discontinued the week after and unsupported the week after that.

I'm liking the look of this :

But this one still has the d-sub and I need it for my kvm.

I was just curious and searched for crt monitor and found just second hand advertisments. The main official sellers do not have it.

CRT ones are generally seen as older ones, and as we all know, an older model isn't what people want, they want something new and fresh to get stuck into.

i wouldn't imagine you being able to get a CRT that no one has had thier hands on. you make your choice it might have been around the block loads of times and might have all sorts of internal problems.

my CRT is very old, and the old girl has served me well, would never get another just yet, saying that though i do have an LCD at work and i do enjoy that much more, it looks so much better.
