Football Manager

Not the old one, but the new one.

The one by Sports Interactive and SEGA.

Have we any FM players on these boards??

Yeah I loved the 2008 one, but haven't really got into 2009. I'm not impressed with the 3D match engine, not compared to the one in Codemasters past effort. And as for the Steam interface, it takes me about 3 minutes just to start the bloody thing, by that time I'm picking a scab and daydreaming somewhere.

I'm a start in a low division merchant as opposed to jumping straight in with one of the big four, so much more of a game when you have to discover talent and nuture it rather than buy it off the shelf. Any one can do that.

Yeah, I think 2009 is shite personally. Cannot get into it at all. No matter what your tactics are you always end up losing 3-2 with all 3 of their goals coming in the last 15 mins.

I was impressed with the 3D match engine until it highlighted how gormless my players were. It does get a bit stupid. I have literally had a player stood within 5 feet of the ball and still get beaten to it by someone who has run 10 yards! I've had balls break from corners and players actually run away from the ball rather than take possession?!?!

The Steam thing I quite like, patching was always a PITA but Steam manages that (no relation by the way!)

    I've gone back to FM2006!

I also like to start at the bottom and work my way up, you're a fellow LLMer as well eh?

I was yes, loved the typical Codemasters attention to detail and quality, but found the gameplay shallow compared to Championship Manager and Football Manager. There is a great little free game I can recommend, its called SoccerManager.com, not complex but you play against other managers for free, which is a nice twist. Most of them quit after losing three games in a row and making the league a farce, but hey, its free!

    Actually, that reminds me...

There is a game online where you actually ARE a football player. Not sure of what it's called though.

But you pick a club to start off at and you have to train, as well as play, to better your skills.

During the match it kind of gives you a text commentary, although I wouldn't be surprised if they haven't made some sort of match engine by now. You have to stay awake to the commentary and when you have the ball you have to decide, based on your position on the pitch, whether to pass or shoot, head etc. I think you also have to decide when to put in tackles as well...

I remember playing it a little a few years back...it's kind of like Player Manager on the ST/Amiga but you play the entire career rather than just the latter end of it and then management.

Anyone know of this game and what it is called/where it can be found?

Not sure...it'd be good if there was a game on Speccy like that.

The one I played, you had to download from t'internet and it gave you 100days free play or something. Then to carry on the game proper you had to register...

The one I'm after is a modern game Fudgie, not a speccy one...
