Anyone ever gone about buying shares in a company?

I don't mean you were offered shares by your building society or suchlike, rather spotted a company you'd like to invest in and wanted to buy some shares in it.

Where do I begin finding out how to buy and if I can?

Online trading, start somewhere like MoneySupermarket.com to find out the options. There are loads of different fee structures dependent on usage levels and advice or no advice etc.
Telephone or brokered trading I don't know about. My online account is 'execution only' meaning no advice just buy sell direct. I can't recommend them (Hoodless Brennan) as though they were very good they have ceased the service and the accounts are being moved (though keeping the terms I signed up to for now).

yeah i think you need a broker, which i think charge. it's not as easy as it sounds. otherwise everyone would be doing it. and i think shares in the big companies are quiet expensive.

I was given shares in Rage Software - really Special FX, but Ocean chopped us up and I went to Sorftware Creations for a few months. Rage was, at the time, called "Elephant Software"! No sh*it! It was me coming back that forced the name change!

Anyways - the shares went for about 90p (I only had about a quarter of million) down to about 13p. In a day!

    And then they went bust!

I'm still owed ?500 for calling them 'Rage' - a 'name' competition which I won! And lost, I guess!

My nephew had loads of shares and is now on the dole!

I could've bought stocks and shares in WHSmiths, if I'd stayed there another year. Lost out on that cos' even though I was there for just over 2 years, the time of year I started didn't coicide with the times the offer the shares to people, something to do with the tax year or something.

You only had to be there 2 years to get them, but because of the time of year that I started I'd have had to wait 3 years instead.

    I disagree.
Never purchase stocks when you're depressed ... you just buy crappy stocks and then when you're doped up trying to sell stuff you end with pennies on the dollar.

All I know is that greed, for the lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right. Greed works. Works well in completely f*cking up the world economy but who cares?

    I prefer VW Beetles myself!

But not the new style ones they're a load of bollocks they are, and associated with women drivers here in the USA.

....the old style ones which are the ones I like seem to be associated with Mexicans here for some reason (I think it's a stereotype of some kind but I don't know? Beanz or Normksi? You've been in the USA a lot longer than I have, maybe you know why?)?

Hmmm ... never heard of this particular stereotype ... just that it's usually 10 Southern-Southerners to a pickup truck.
