    What?

Aww ... boohoo ... and I like to use it to see if people are replying to [my BS] threads I'm watching/replying ... it's especially handy late at night when I've posted something and I know someone else is participating in a discussion ... just to check to see if it's time for beddy-bye-bye or if there's "just one more post" to be made before hitting the sack ... I usually "give up" if people are idle for 5-10 mins (at night).

    Oh, well.

Aww ... crudley crackers! It's my fault ... the mods can give me a PM for details if ... err ... the other person hasn't supplied enough info.

    I'm sorry peeps :-(

I use the feature to see if people are replying in threads I've recently replied in ... but my big mouth got this feature turned off ... sorry.

It happened earlier this afternoon, when I became aware it even existed...

Privacy is a very important thing in my mind. Not having people see exactly what you are doing every second is An Important Right. Since the Who's Online feature invades this privacy, I turned it off immediately when I learned of its existence...

Dude ... it's been there since at least 2004

But I agree with your decision.

Sorry people ... I didn't know I was (unintentionally) invading your privacy!

Hey, Mr WoS Himself ... are you able to narrow it down to at least just show if people are replying to (named) threads? I.e. not to show if people are reporting threads ;-) and suchlike piddley stuff?

I hope you enjoyed your spying during these 5 years, as it's over now. :D

Sorry ... didn't know I was spying, nor did I mean it as such, but I can definitely see that it can be understood as such ... I only use(d) it to see if people were replying in threads I was participating in ... as per my previous post in this thread.

I looked at all options this afternoon and found it cannot be tweaked (without manually changing the php code). Therefore I turned it off completely.

Is this a viable/doable option, if at all, now/later?

No, sorry. The forums are the only part of the site that I will not want to author (see earlier threads). That's why I picked vBulletin.

Oh, by the by ... could you then also disable the "Last Activity:" under "General Information" under "Statistics"

No probs ... thought I'd ask while we're on (this particular) topic

I never actually used it, I just look at who's online via the main forum page, chances are if I've posted something that wasn't bollocks, then chances are somebody will've replied to it.

I'm not an internutter, and don't need to know who's online all the time.

Sorry Normski you stalker you ;)

I don't care who's online ... I just looked at if a reply was being made ... my ADDOCDBSness often compels me to stay up longer than necessary so this was my way of keeping myself in check. I didn't keep myself up if I saw people in a thread were idle for a few minutes.

    But it's all ok :-)

To disable it or you're not seeing what I'm talking about?

But it's all ok also ... each person can turn this off themselves via the User CP.

Oh, and another quick question kinda sorta along these lines and yet not:

I notice the http://www.worldofspectrum.org/forums/search.php?do=getnew function does do an automatic update but it seems to be inconsistent in when/how often it actually updates.

Can you tell me the specifics of how this function works ... why does it sometimes just sit around not updating and then other times it seems to do it every other minute or so.

Erm - is it just me, or does the title of this thread seem a little ambiguous? Perhaps raising privacy concerns of its own?

I usually tend to see who's online to determine if I should stay online or come back later.

It's a shame vBulletin doesn't allow tweaking. In every other board that I visit the user can address his own privacy concerns my determining his online status visibility in his profile. And the funny thing is that most Specchums tend to leave it on (i.e. they don't care if their online status is visible or not).

But we'll adapt to it. Resistance is futile. :)

    Exactly!

I usually tend to close the bar too...

Erm... I don't get it!! Are we talking about the bar at the bottom of the main page that shows everyone's usernames? If so, mine's still working...
