Euphemisms

edited July 2009 in Chit chat
I'm always on the lookout for any good ones.

There are a couple sprinkled through the WC thread (no pun intended), such as an "Eartha" (Kitt) - no explanation required!

My personal favourite though has to be my mates extensive use of "Easy Rider" (Cider). I don't drink it myself but he even asks for it at the bar!

Other regulars include: -

"It's a bit Judge in 'ere" (Judge Dredd - Dead)
"It's all Tommy Tank" (Things are a bit rubbish)
"It's gone a bit Pete" (Tong - Wrong)

Any weird and wonderful ones out there?

If someone bigger than you is generally getting on your nerves you could say "He's a bit of an RFM!" (this is one I made up myself relating to a night out where an old mate of mine had this big dopey prick with him who kept telling me to breakdance).

I referred to him as a ridiculous fat mongel, hence RFM! was born!

The rule of RFM is though, you can never actually use it to describe someone with a genuine disability, it is reserved only for annoying loudmouthed goons (ALG's :D).

You appear to have confused euphemisms with (cockney) rhyming slang.

That'll be the cockney rhyming slang that is the oldest form of euphemism there is??

Some rhyming slang is euphemism but most of the ones you posted aren't :p

Quite. There was a sort of teen-soap about holiday reps a few years ago called, "Is Harry on the Boat?" If you know your rhyming slang for 'Harry' (Monk) and 'Boat' (Race), you'd know that the titular question is, in fact, "Do I have sp**k on my face?"

Although I quite like posh rhyming slang - "You're having a Gerald Scarfe, aren't you?"

If you want a list of actual euphemisms, try tracking down a song by 'Weird' Al Yankovic, entitled Pet Names for Genetalia - a spoof of Billy Joel's We Didn't Start the Fire.

Now, you see, that is pure genius.

I know if I bounded in tonight and announced to STeaMette, "Honey, tonight I'm putting Harry on the Boat" she'd look at me blank and just say "Eh? You've bought a boat?".
