Alot of these so called repairmen have begun by building their own PC and thinking this is easy.
However, when any tricky software related issue happens their knowlege tops out and defaults to format re-install. Often this is not required and takes 15-20 mins of tinkering the registry or drivers in the system 32 folder.
I know what you mean. I leave System Recovery as the last option. I've successfully avoided it several times.
Spybot, eh? I don't like that program. I might need a combination of programs like mbam and sas but most of the time a lot of manual repair is involved, the hard drive needs to be scanned using another computer or booting from a live disk, etc. Some people find a way to get rid of viruses but don't fix the damaged caused by them.
I remove viruses from computers with AVG, Spybot and Lavasoft Ad-aware every week. In fact, I've removed viruses from computers that had nod32, avast, avira, and even Kaspersky. Users might have the best possible anti-virus program, but if they don't know what they're doing they'll have a problem sooner or later.
This thread reminds me of something my sister said a while back to me on the phone.
There was an advert where she works for a helpdesk/support technician and she said she was going to apply for it because - and I quote - "the only thing I don't know how to do is put the Internet Explorer icon back on the desktop if someone deletes it......"
Needless to say I laughed for.....well I still laugh about it  and it was about 2-3 years ago.

Or the classic conversation that happens regularly..
'So, you build websites?'
'Yes'
'Well, if you build one for me, for free, then I will put your company name at the bottom and you get free advertising!'
'You sell cars?'
'Yes'
'Well, you give me a free car and I'll drive around with a sticker on the back advertising your business'
'I'm, not giving you an expensive car!'.......
i "fix" puters for friends...but i aint an expert, some problems i just cant fix tbh
the majority i can tho
That's exactly the way to do it.
I dislike the sorts in question here(Not all of them - but about 90% of them) as they more often than not anonymously breach all manner of license agreements and fool/talk shite to people. I've started bringing home "recycled from work" desktops and laptops for friends and family because I can't stomach it any more.
Perfect example - Girlfriends Mum.
Had one of those "PC Repair Service" guys as her PC guy - all he did was charge money for nothing at all. Last time I was there I swapped the phone cable and the DSL cable in the z-filter splitter thingy into their correct positions - after he had been there. Internet constantly disconnecting solved.
Also gave her a PC I legitimately built with XP - ever since she tells me it's super fast and problem free compared to the man-in-a-vans badly built and very unreliable generic PC that came complete with pirate XP, Pirate Office, wierd anti-virus/viruses etc etc etc.
If I ever see him I'm gonna let his vans tires down. Stopping him getting to his next victim quickly.

i am a immoral person in most respects, but i wouldn't go so far as to rip people off with shody goods or services. but surely there is a market for someone to do that sort of easy job for people who can't seem to do it themselves.
anyway it does sound like a good way to make a good bit of cash, but i think i'd like to know a bit more about doing decent work before i start printing out business cards.
prolly not much money in it for honest folk. but then when i bought my power supply from PC world, they said they'd fit it for me for 25 quid. he said it with a smile too the cheeky bast.
Oh - don't get me wrong- we pretty much know that the regulars here are good guys right?
I've just seen a lot of cowboys that really should be on Watchdog doing this sort of thing.
I'd say go for it if you can find a gap to fill. You are after all an upstanding decent person by all accounts init :)
And the more good people that do it the better.

Yeah......that is the gottcha here.
I know I could make good honest money doing it.....but it still wouldn't feel quite right for some reason.........it's something to do with that walking away moment when you realise they still don't understand what you've tried to advise them so whatever it was doesn't happen again a day or two later..........so I stick to people I care about and do it for nothing - which is rewarding enough for me.
