Don't see the point in buying a PS3.

PS3 is expensive, as is the games.

If your on a shoestring budget, a pc and a copy of MAME is money better spent, and if you can't afford a new pc, then get a second hand one which is reasonably fast. It far more fun!

i think it'd be cheaper to get an xbox 360. mine was certainly cheaper than my PC.

    (i think he has a PC anyway :) )

as for the games, you can buy them all second hand now in game, for about a tenner.

I have the original PS3 with the hardware PS2 and PS1 emulation built in. I bought it a couple of years ago just before they were discontinued, because I made the assumption that there would at some point be some games I wanted to play, and I didn't want to have to shell out for the cut-down 'software emulated' model when I eventually decided to.

In the intervening time, I have purchased only one game: Little Big Planet. And that did not capture my attention for very long. Oh, I also just bought Astro Tripper by PomPom games... And that's just because I used to work with the guys who wrote it.

There are two upcoming games I'm interested in... The Last Guardian and God of War 3. Everything else I've been interested in has come out on the Xbox 360, so I've bought it for that.

In terms of a games machine, it's been a complete waste of time and money. However, as a networked video player and blu-ray disk player, it's got a lot of use... I wouldn't necessarily say it was worth the initial cost, but it's certainly not just sat there gathering dust.

If you have a lot of PS3-exclusive games you want to play or you can see using it as a networked media/blu-ray player, then by all means go for it. If you want it to replace a PS2, then check the compatibility list or look for a hardware-emulation model (difficult as they've been discontinued as of a couple of years ago - at least in the US. I've got a vague feeling that Europe never got the hardware emulation model).

The 360 is horrendously noisy though. If you install the game to hard drive you can reduce the noise but it is still louder than a Dreamcast, which I thought was noisy at the time.

This no longer applies for the 360 (since the past 1 year in fact). IAC, you now have the Install to Hard Disk feature, which is great. Now if only MS reduced prices on the hard disks... *grumble* *grumble*

Yep. The hardware PS2 emulation was never in the PAL version:

Are you sure? I have never seen (heard) an XBox 360 that was quieter than a Dreamcast. Could every one I have seen be a year 1 model?

Nah, what M$ have done is give users the option to install all of the game files to the hard drive and run the game from there rather than the DVD (the disk still needs to be in the drive). So the DVD drives are still noisy, but not used.

I'm not saying the 360 is less noisy than the Dreamcast. I haven't seen a Dreamcast in action so I can't comment on that. :) OOC, is the PS3 less noisy than the Dreamcast?

I was referring to the "horrendously noisy" part. That no longer applies for reasons Vampyre gave above. But then I have not found the drive on my 360 to be noisy enough to distract me, but that could also be something specific to my model version (I have the Halo 3 LE version) or machine. Dunno if MS has upgraded the DVD drives to a better and silent one.

I think Steam is fab, not perfect, but definitely the future for games distribution.

However, if Football Manager is crap, why did you stick with it??? :D

mostly because I've spent $$$ on it, and I'm to stubborn to quit (but it's the firts time on a FM, that I don't find any logic in the training, tactics, or buy/sell players...).

for some reason Steam has for the past 3 months been down on my pc, it gives some sort of error, and then one day works, the next it doesnt...and I can't even reach the offline version of the game (I might just have some fucked up virus on my pc... although steam is the only program that isn't working well...).

As for the ps3 the slim version sounds nice...but the games all do look the same don't they?

Yup, it's *really* quiet - almost cartridge-based system quiet. Even with a disc spinning you have to stick your ear inches from the ps3 to hear it.
