Oh, come on now! Mel the bell's text type things can't really be classed as 'posts'.

personally I'd remove the cgi chat client altogether and just have a page of detailed instructions for using a proper client.

that or install one of the many other web based irc clients on the server. CGI:IRC just seems painfully unstable

Examples are greatly appreciated. If a good replacement is known, I can perhaps use that instead.

    any preferences on architecture?
there's numerous flash and java based clients on sourceforge. I can't give any recommendations I'm afraid because I always use a real client :)

Java sounds okay for this (as we have other Java things going here). Which client(s) did you find? I haven't really looked as of late, but previously the offerings weren't so good...

sourceforge is driving me mad throwing away the search filters I've set every time I go onto the next page of results! (why do they have to keep breaking the website? grr)

there's a flash based one that looks quite mature, but it also looks a bit heavy http://sourceforge.net/projects/netbitsflashirc/

    or an AJAX-ey one: http://sourceforge.net/projects/wircc/

Like I say, I couldn't recommend anything and I didn't find any java ones that looked anything like recent. I'm sure they ARE in there if you can get the search to work, or trawl through hundreds of abandoned projects :(

perhaps freshmeat is worth a look too
