Divide Plus, +3e ROMS and Residos - computer locks up

edited August 2009 in Hardware
Hello all

I have Divide + and Spectrum +3 with +3e ROMS (v 1.37)

I have read RWAP software's Divide Plus user manual and on page 9 of the manual it states Residos can be started by typing the following command:-

OUT 23,73 : POKE 18455,237 : POKE 18456,65 : POKE 18457,199 : PRINT USR 18455

Result I get after typing the above command is purple flashing blocks and some lines of corruption, but no Residos screen. CF card is formatted to FAT as I use Fatware too.

ResiDOS homepage recommends typing the same as above, but missing out the OUT 23,73 from the beginning of the line. Tried that too, but still everything locks up.

Any ideas what the problem may be? Had a browse through the past threads on the forum but no clues as to what the problem may be. If it comes to the worse, and I need to reinstall residos, will it overwrite any of the other firmwares on the interface?

Other firmwares work with no problem on the interface.

The initial OUT should not be used.

Have you previously used ResiDOS at all? It sounds like this might be your first attempt. If so, you'll need to install it first.

This certainly won't affect the other divIDE firmwares, which all live in the Flash EPROM of the interface. ResiDOS only uses the battery-backed RAM.

First time user. I just copied the residos tap file onto CF card and reloaded it via fatware. Seems to of fixed the problem so I suspect the battery backed ram was corrupted :-)

    Ah, thanks for info :-)

Now onto my next question. Which firmware ? Fatware lets you access files on CF card using PC, and IDEDOS lets you use Spectrum +3e ROM. What is the most popular amongst users? I presume you can transfer files to and from fatware and IDEDOS partitions?

    Third question:

I noticed a file called RESIDOS.CFG created on the root of the CF card. What is this file, does it need to be their and what does it do?

...I'm going to get stuck into reading the residos manual tommorow :-)

Or, just as likely, it had never been installed in the first place.

    FATware can use FAT partitions.
    +3e can use IDEDOS partitions.
ResiDOS can use FAT16 and IDEDOS partitions.

It's more tricky to transfer files onto IDEDOS partitions, since PCs can't directly access these. One option is to connect both a FAT and IDEDOS disk (or setup a shared disk - see the website) and use ResiDOS to copy files between the two. An alternative option is to use the new "3e" utility (see emulator forum) to copy files directly to an IDEDOS partition. I believe there is also now a graphical frontend available for "3e".

ResiDOS creates this file to hold permanent settings used on boot (such as any manual mappings you set up, an autorun filename etc). You can delete it without any problems, although ResiDOS will just create another one the next time it boots ;-)

For ResiDOS, you may be better to use the website, which is more up-to-date and also has all the extra goodies that you can download and install.
