if someone doesn't know what a recovery disk is for, then giving them one will have as little effect as getting them to burn their own - if it breaks they'll bring it back and say "it no work, make patooty work again!" or take it to their long suffering neighbourhood geek who already has a massive stash of recovery CDs and tools burnt to disk anyway.
Or that geek can post on a forum and insult people, rather than help them out.
I, for instance, have a quad photonic stabalising rectifyer, that instantly backs up my 2442 different machines every 5 years (some are fridge stored to cool their fans, and need ice cream every now and again). This is fine in the summer, but when Xmas comes all hell breaks loose!
Vista and Windows 7 actually upgrade by performing a clean install then running a migration wizard on the old install, it actually works much better than the old days when it was attempting to perform an in-situ upgrade.
Cool. Hopefully when I upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 it'll go pretty smoothly. As long as the basics are there (eg, internet connectivity) I don't mind reinstalling the odd application. Although hopefully many apps will still be present after the upgrade?
It's perfectly fair. pretty much all the laptops we sell at our shop has the basic guide from the manufacturer that states at some point about making recovery discs. If the customer chooses to ignore that and not make them, can the manufacturer be blamed for that?
Yeah i baught a laptop recently and it does say all over it to create a backup disc, simple init.Erm no it isnt after trying to write it to dvd 5 times! i finaly gave up. There was also a handy piece of paper in the box that said if i required a physical disc to go on to the web site and request one simple.Erm no manufacturers web site directs me to an external site where it asks for credit cars details etc etc i paid for it it dont work i aint paying again. But its probably my fault for beein a dullard so there you go.

Erm.. did you try a different disc? No writer can write to any disc, you may just need a different brand/type.
"Erm, oh, Hello?"
"Hello!"
"The monitor on my Laptop has ceased to function."
"Is it still under warranty?"
"Would it make any difference?"
"You'll get a discount."
"So, if I bring it in you'll fix it?"
"No. We charge you ?65 to look at it and tell you what's wrong. If you want us to fix it that is extra."
"But I know what is wrong. Will you take ?65 off the bill?"
"No. Did you buy the laptop from us?"
"Would I get a discount for that?"
"No."
"Oh, in that case I didn't buy it off you."
"We can still look at it for you and tell you that the screen doesn't work."
"How much will that cost me?"
"?65"
"How much is your cheapest external monitor?"
"?65"
"Does it work?"
"It'll cost you ?65 to find out."
"Is that two times ?65?"

Eh a different brand, could it be my laptop refuses to operate using ALDI no frills discs:-). Disc type should be right but i will try using different disc. It does write some data to the disc but when it checks the disc before finishig the backup prcedurer it gets 40% way through and says theres an error and to insert new disc.

I suggest using DVD-R discs, I find them to be a tad more reliable in recorders than others, and Verbatim or Sony discs are usually very good quality.

Don't just talk - say something.
