Best cover art

edited May 2004 in Games
My vote goes to Quicksilva during the early years.

The covers of Ant Attack , Meteor Storm , Space Intruders , Astro Blaster ect ect ect.
I think these were done by the same artist and seem to sum up the "feel" of early games from those days.
I guess that because some of these games (AntAttack excluded) were pretty poor efforts , they needed to spark the buyers imagination and the atmosphere of the game by using cool artwork. Something that was missing as the years went on I feel.. :)

Anywayzz wats your favorite??

Ultimate had some good cover art. I liked the art for Sabrewulf - neat stuff!

Right, lets get the girly ones out the way first!!!

Vixen, Game Over (with nipple) and Barbarian!!

Most of the Ultimate covers were pretty good, and I would say that Nightshade was my favourite. Other good ones were Wizball, Lord of the Rings (original with book), Fairlight 1 + 2 and of course any Horace game!!!
    Sausages is more important

i loved the artwork on the lords of midnight / doomdarks revenge games. Some of the ocean efforts - Kong , Hunchback were good even if the games werent. Also the mikro gen covers were nice - Automania , 3 weeks etc.

Most of the stuff done by Ocean/Imagines Bob Wakelin was good.

I have to agree with the posting about Quicksilva's early releases - most, if not all are superb.

Ant Attack, Velnor's Lair, the superb Dragonsbane and Mined Out (nice nips) as well as Zombie Zombie (both covers).

I also like a lot of the Software Projects covers - those penguins are everywhere.....

Bob Wakelins output for Ocean was amazingly consistant. A year ago I contacted someone (can't remember exactly who) about buyng some and only a few were left. Would love to own one.

Overall Ultimates covers were the best adding massively to their mysterious reputation. They were pretty unique as well with their gothic borders and strange styles. They set the mind racing as to what the game was going to turn out like.

Quick silva's covers were excellent, Fred is another one of their's that's worth a mention.

Ultimate's were great, even Martianoid's cover had Me fooled into buying it.

I also liked Odin and Thor's, as well as Hewson's, and the cartoon style of M.A.D was appealing.

my favourites are probably the early CRL inlays. They were all drawn by Phil Gascoigne (who later went and designed some inlays for Silversoft). He always signed his inlays.

Zaraks, Lunar Rescue, Warlocks Treasure, Crawler, Alien Maze, Caveman, Test match, 3D Desert Patrol, Woods of Winter, Incredible Adventure, Stargazer Secrets, Draughts, Galatic Patrol, Handicap Golf.

Are the CRL ones he did that I have...i suspect theres one more to get ;)

would love to know what happened to him..

Next favourite would be Abbex Electronics..

    regards

Two covers come straight to mind...

Apocalypse by Red Shift. Great artwork and it's one of my all-time favourites so take a look :)

Valhalla - simple but had serious visual impact that made me actually save some pennies to buy the game. Good game too.
