very strange clouds tonight

edited September 2009 in Chit chat
I stepped out earlier at about 1am for a cig, and there was no wind at all, calm enough for the flame from my lighter to not even flicker, yet the clouds were the lowest I have ever seen clouds, very thick cover, and racing across the sky faster than I have ever seen clouds move before. the weirdest thing was in the gaps in the clouds going by, you could see the next layer of clouds - that can't have been more than a couple of hundred feet above them - not moving at all! full moon as well so it was quite a bizarre sight. this went on for a good couple of hours. there's just normal dense cloud cover now, barely moving. any budding meteorologists here care to explain this one? was pretty interesting.

Oh God! It`s the end of the world! Or perhaps it is the Autumn creeping up. But it did look cool, I was out walking my cat.

I noticed that too. Very cool and apocalyptic looking.

Different layers of air move in their own patterns, so it's very possible for one layer of cloud to be moving in the opposite direction to another layer of cloud.

Yep - that's how you 'steer' a hot air balloon - by changing altitude until you find the wind blowing the way you want to go.

It's called low level windshear. You can guarantee anyone flying that night was in for a bit of an exciting approach to the airport. (You probably wouldn't want to be flying a hot air balloon in those conditions :-) )

Windshear has claimed its fair share of airliners. (Smaller planes typically cope with it better, less inertia, and engines that respond faster).

...Then a sow gave birth to a two headed calf...then I saw two moons and a star...Wormwood was it's name...in the morning the milk turned into blood.

    Bah..scientific mumbo jumbo.

Sounds like it was eerie weather.
I stole it off a space ship.

I've seen it happen a few times here in the US, I don't really care for a full blown explaination, I'm just gonna say it looks cool.

It's been storming here for the last 3 days, oop there goes some thunder now!
    Every night is curry night!

....and the forcast for tonight is, eerie weather throughout the northeast followed by a spooky fog in the morning, clearing up for a jolly bit of sun.

Yeah, but it would still be the wrong forecast ;)

aha that would be it then...pity there's a boring old scientific explanation really, lol.

maybe the cat was perched on the end of a broomstick, and by walking, he meant 'flying'...it was perfect conditions for it.
