Alan Turing Apology

edited September 2009 in Chit chat
There's an On-line Petition calling for an apology for the way Alan Turing (of Enigma code machine fame) way treated for being gay.

I think the government has more important things to be worrying about.

The guy is dead. How are they going to say sorry? Tie it to a white dove and hope it flies into the afterlife?

Done and done, After all his contribution to WW2 can never be underestimated. And having seen the C4 Docudrama "A Very British Sex Scandal" some time ago, being gay before decriminalisation must've been an utter nightmare.

I like Oscar Wilde's quote at the time of his trial. On being asked if he was a practicing homosexual he is said to have replied: "No, I'm really quite good at it."

i thought buggery was illegal, not being homosexual.

I know many people did not like many of Margaret Thatcher's policies but one thing she did do was help decriminalise gay sex (I think before she was PM).

Can't help thinking she wanted to legalise the act of buggery so she could do it to the whole country...

I support gay rights and admire Alan Turing, but I don't like online petitions and think official apologies are pointless. It is done, it happened and it is part of our history so apologising decades later changes nothing. The apologies seem a bit meaningless when they are made by people who were not responsible, and likely not even born when it happened.

I saw a few familiar names in that list, wonder if it's actually anyone I know or just people who happen to have the same names as them?

Apology given, signed by the PM himself.

Agree with that, it was bad what they did to him but i'm sure many other people back then went to jail for similar offences. Surely they should also be pardoned ?

I would like my great great great great aunt to be pardoned as back in 1842 she went to jail for 3 days for stealing an apple (when she didnt do it).

I admire anyone for helping Britain during the war, straight, gay or whatever.

i was listening to some blokes talking about the d-day landing, and one of them was a you know what. ;) and he put a full face of make up on before he landed on the beach, his mates said he definatly scared the jerries when they saw him.

A good idea. I think if all the soldiers who landed had 'Slipknot' style masks or Kiss style make-up (Obviously way before either came out) but it would have scared the heebee-geebies out of the germans

Good old fashioned face paint used in war has always worked

What is chemical castration anyway. Did they inject him with something and his balls drop off? Or did the chemicals just stop his balls from working?

It was a real travesty what they done to him especially after all he had done for the country. He had so much more to give computing.

It's just amazing how barbaric we still were half a century ago.
