freecycle
Just wondered if anyone was a member of there local freecycle group. Ive just joined the one in my area and over the last six months there has been two lots of spectrum stuff on offer, so they dont come up that often and there seems to be quite a few people interested when they do. So the odds of getting anything are quite low but i thought its worth a try and it keeps them from being sent to the tip.
Also if youre after a crt tv its awash with them about 3/4 a day and ocasionaly crt monitors, i even spotted an amiga and an old mac being offered.

I recently got a new shed/workshop and got a kitchen worktop, cut it to fit, added legs from Ikea and voila a workbench.
Also got a very large CRT monitor, which was used by a national newspaper, (the colours are superb) for the PC that lives in there on the thinking that no-one wants a CRT and at 30Kg its a bit heavy to pinch and try to flog around the pubs!
In general, I've found freecycle to be a bit pikey, some people advertise stuff because they are too lazy to it take to the dump or too tight to pay for collection.
The idea is that items are saved from landfill so we're doing the world a favour but when you collect it, the owners, rather than be proud that they are "helping to save the planet", look down their noses at you, been my experience anyway.
Things do go quickly, so if you see something you are after get in there quick and don't be surprised if you hear nothing!

Needless to say it was snapped and collected within 10 minutes of posting.
I got a working Amstrad CPC464 with monitor and rf adapter plus loads of cds and stuff but they just ended taking up space and not being used so i ended up giving them away again 3 months later.
apparently though you have to be carefull what you are offering as people use it to swop wives, no kidding. there is a code though. can't remeber what it said but it was out of a swingers mag i was reading at a mates house.
for instance
large 2 draw fridge needs collecting, motor not working = i have a large wife who will take it both ways
old sofa can seat 4, need re-upholsting = lots of men wanted for my old wife
vacum cleaner with plenty of attacments, needs new fan = you can work that out yourself.
generally they offer broken good to stop causal buyers getting in touch. and usually when you get in touch to pick up the goods they know you didn't understand properly.
why do they do it on freecycle? well its free.
I use it to give stuff away, which for whatever reason I can't sell, or don't want to. There are some decent people on there, and a lot of time wasters.
when I gave a boat away, there was a virtual stampede of people who wanted it, without thinking it through, it eventually found it's way to a good home after much messing about.
I sold the engine on ebay, but gave the boat away, cos I didn't want the hassle of selling it.
I wondered why we were getting bombarded with calls when we listed those items on freecycle ! We genuinely do have an old sofa which seats 4, and a vaccum cleaner in good nick but needs a new fan. Was surprised by how many people were calling us, now i understand.
As per me. Derby area. No speccies.
About 4 speccys in there, tons of games also. Nice lucky one that
Got a steady trickle of takers from that.
you sod !!!!!!!! Dammit, :p
Actually I did get some great deals.
I always told people that I was paying them less than they could get if they sold it themselves when it was the case, not one person minded.
Sometimes it was worth it for me to basically buy junk and strip it down for cables and leads etc.
I see this at car boot sales all the time. Not just spectrums though other stuff too.
If they have an Ipod or Flat screen computer or TV screen they have it in their heads that its 'their little nest egg' the 'prized possesion of their store' usually placed right in the center of the table (nearest them) i.e. dont touch the shiny things. Woe betide if you offer lower than they expect.
I had this one about nine months ago:
Me: How much for that 17" computer monitor.
Seller: Make me an offer (said with a bit of a smirk).
Me: Uh I dunno, say ?25?
Seller: WHAT!!??!
Me: Hmm ok ?30
Seller: Aye?? :-x
Me: Ok final offer ?35.
Seller: It's a flat screen mate!!??!!
Me: Its a fair price, what were you expecting?
Seller: I wanted at least ?90.
Me: You never get that.
Seller: It's a flat screen mate!!??!!
Me: Thanks bye bye.
Seller: *him and his wife shake their heads in disbeleif*
Though you could replace flat screen for IPod, Laptop, digital camera, or even wireless router (obviously for laptops the price offered is different but the story's the same).
A couple approached them
How much are the t shirts ?
10p
How much for all 3 ?
30p
(Then they walked off as they expected 3 for 20p or something)
I know theres haggling and then theres haggling, but when somethings frickin 30p ! Come on.
