Retro arcade.

edited September 2009 in Chit chat
I remember reading many moons ago reading an article about collectors of old arcade cabinets whod open up their collections for special event days to members. I think at the time you could get 12 months membership for fifty pound or something like that and could visit so many weekends in a year. I think they would also run twin galaxy style competions as well. I imagine theyre still going today as its a great idea, i was just wondering if anybody had ever signed up for anything like this and what areas they were in.

Also while im on this subject im sure like myself its the ambition of many here to have their own personal arcade even if it was only one machine, but im also sure many here will be walking around with a virtual arcade tucked away in their heads some where so lets hear whats in there. To keep it grounded ill limit it to ten machines, any era,any type and any region.

My ten havent been finalised yet so ill probably post it later and maybe steal some ideas from here.

Oh and if you want to be specific and include what cabinet version you prefer thats fine, and in some cases is quite important as in the example of out run which i find unplayable in its upright cabinet.

    Rastan Saga.

Err ... that's about it, really, liked that one the most.

Don't know how Id justify it in this day and age, particularly with MAME being so accessible these days, but I think Id go for my fave Double Dragon (the original)... Since, your limiting our speculative imaginings to 10, Id probably throw in a few more in there too, like CityBomber, Soul Calibar (yes, I know thats more recent), Rastan (yep, I liked that too, but found the swingy bits on level two a sod) and maybe Growl (a farily decent beat-em-up)...

Did I mention I get soooo bored of list threads...

    1. Space Harrier
    2. Time Pilot
    3. Power Drift
    4. R-Type
    5. Mappy
    6. Ridge Racer
    7. Splatterhouse
    8. Gauntlet II
    9. I, Robot
    10. Raiden II

P.S. Vulcan Venture is Gradius II, not III. Salamander doesn't count in the Gradius series, and has it's own seperate sequel. There's a genuine Gradius III that's absolutely basket hard, even with the dip switches set to easy. It has a new feature where you can choose to only lose one power-up when you die, but have no continues, or use the standard lose-everything but use continues.

There is a place in Devon called the Arcade Barn. It's an old barn full of retro arcade machines that the owners have lovingly restored to mint condition.

You can hire the place out for parties or on some open weekends pay ?5 to get in then play for as long as you want all day on free play. It would be neat to have a WOS meet there some day.

I brought my arcade machine from a guy who works their, so I was sure I was getting a good, well looked after machine.

The website for the arcade barn is: http://www.arcadebarn.co.uk/

Here is their list of games:
    Cockpits:

    After Burner (Deluxe moving cockpit)
    Star Blade
    Star Wars
    Red Baron
