HyperSports: Weight Lifting

edited September 2009 in Games
I swear it is physically impossible to lift 6. MIDDLE HEAVY 225kg or above. this has always annoyed me because I've always wanted to do this game i.e. end up lifting 8. SUPER HEAVY 260kg and therefore 'complete' the game but it's too hard. stupidly hard. anyone ever achieved this? is there an 'end screen'? I reckon I could do it if it wasn't for the weights because I think I'm good enough at all the other events. I can get 9.99 in the jump onto the horse event and get maximum 'NICE's on archery.

Thing is, not only does it get more difficult to lift the weights the heavier you go (which is fair enough, and pretty self-explanatory) BUT the timer gradually increases in speed the heavier you go, leaving you less and less time to do the more difficult weights...flippin impossible I say

Do you use the keyboard or the joystick? I've only ever used the keyboard and could never lift much past 150kg, even after all these years.

keyboard always - back in the day, and now on spin emu

I would like to add that considering how hard the weight lifting event is, the swimming, clay pidgeon shooting, and tripple jump are always a piece of piss! (although very fun to play)

You're obviously better than me, I sometimes get good scores on the horse (highest is maybe 9.81) but often mess it up completely. I've never had all "Nice" on the archery either. I find it easier to bash the buttons on the real machine though. I assume you know that in the shooting you can press both buttons at the same time and the targets stay the same speed? One of the advantages of using the keyboard! Same with Enduro Racer, you can wheelie and accelerate at the same time. Indeed I was playing Hyper Sports here in Japan yesterday on my Spectrum, hooked up to an old monitor, running of a MIDI synth power supply and using an iPod to load the game.

Have the arcade PCB too, I just can't do the pole vault at all...

its only since re-discovering this game on here with spin that I've managed to do this (on the archery). could never do it when I was a kid

no, didn't know this. but having said that I can get the 'duck' about 9 times out of 10 so probably don't need this tip, but I'll try it out tho' :)

Spent lots of time playing it back then. I can get almost perfect scores on the first two events but never figured out what to do in event 3. I always found the keyboard much easier than joystick.

As it's essentially just a test of your ability to play a piano trill faster than Rachmaninoff, why not cheat by slowing down your emulator?

tried this, no luck. in fact it made it worse!

without wanting to sound arrogant (and there are a lot of games I will admit I'm crap at), I would rate my general left/right button bashing skills as very good. never got past #6 on the weights tho'...

The game will have a specific keyboard sampling frequency - probably linked to the 50Hz interrupt frequency.

If it so happens that the game checks the keyboard every three interrupt cycles (0.06 seconds), and you slow it down to 20% speed, then you have to swap keys every 0.3 seconds.

Mashing the keyboard as fast as possible won't help at all, if you've slowed down the emulator so much that your key presses are faster than the Spectrum can scan them.

Try emulating at about 10% speed, and pressing the keys at a slow and steady rate, in time with a metronome if you have one.

Isn't that for the sequel Zen Sports?

Olympic events run at 10% speed often have a zen-like aspect to them.

Apparently, houseflies have a reaction speed much faster than that of humans.
Look out for Zen and the Art of Fly Swatting in the CGC.

(Maybe not this year's CGC, as I myself have a zen-like attitute to BASIC programming.)

thanks for the info, strangely tho my emu will not recognise any key presses if I run it lower than 61% for some reason. I found this out a while back when I was trying to slow down Batty and Arkanoid

I haven't a clue if the last weight is possible or not. I guess it should be - there is no way I would every release a game with a bug in it!

I haven't played Hyper Sports for decades!

And I'm not going to now!

I can vouch for the fact that it's possible to do them all up to the penultimate weight, as I did it back in the day. I think it helped that my dad (who took his computing seriously) bought on of those 'proper' keyboards in metal case - cant recall the make, but if anyone wants to make an offer on it it's in my garage still! - and that allowed some serious key bashing in games like Hyper Sports, Decathlon etc.

Indeed, I got some monster javelin throws and awesome swimming/running times out of that thing too!

Rather than hammering to keyboard / joystick on this event - try doing it slowly!

I've just done 225kg right now and am completely exhausted... I'll have a go at the two heavier weights in a while.

Oh and can I just say, Hyper Sports, Green Beret and Mikie are three of my favourite games and started me on computer games and programming, and have given me 23 years of enjoyment. Thank you very much for them.

PIRATES! The lot of ya! Where's my bloody money!

    We're starving up here!

One thing that does go against you on the Spectrum is that you need three white lights to succeed, whereas on the original PCB you only need two (as it is in real weightlifting). I've managed to get one light lit on 240kg, I'll keep trying until I either get it or have a heart attack.

    I think not...

Try doing it slowly! 'tip-tap' rather than being frantic.

I think I wasn't precise about the arcade version. You need two *out of* three to qualify. On the Spectrum it's three out of three.

I think you are clutching at straws here! LOL!

    You know you are wrong!

It doesn't really matter anyway, does it? LOL!

EDIT - the big problem with the Hyper Sport conversions was the lack of the 'Pole Vault'. I had written this but couldn't fit it the memory in time for release. I asked for more time, but Dave Collier, who did the C64 version and had yet to write this event, said "No, we'll drop it". And that was that.

I think I'm glad there's no pole vault, I wouldn't be able to do it. I was going to be cheeky and suggest you use that hardware add-on Imagine made for Bandersnatch so you could fit the extra event in. I'd have paid ?40 for it... (and an LP to go along with it, what were they thinking).

I've just been trying the arcade version now, the weightlifting is far harder than on the Spectrum version.

Arcade machines just want you pump money into them!

I guess Hyper Sports would have been better as a multi-load game, but they hadn't been invented yet!

shame about this - alhough I would probably have been crap at it if the daley thompson pole vault is anything to go by...

Now for 260kg! It's just gone 20 past nine at night and I've had booze but let's push on!

It wasn't like the Daley one - which used arc drawing code. My was fast and simple!

    Wollop! It's over!
