My car is fooookked!

edited September 2009 in Chit chat
Went out driving today, and the high temp light/gauge came on....

Pulled over, checked the water. NONE IN THERE!!!

So, filled it up....went on my way...

Temp was normal and car seems normal....

When I got back, I checked the water again...and its gone :(

Where is it going....Any ideas??

Ive checked the oil, no muck in it...It has had a new head gasket years ago...

Think it does leak a bit on the road when it is parked up

Hole in your radiator seems the obvious choice...the small leak when parked up might not be indicative of the system under pressure...

put some dye in it which you can buy from the auto store and then watch closely while you run the engine...check the exhaust too to see if that looks strange...i.e a lot of steam in it....probably a hole in the radiator, hose or leaking gasket...the dye will help a lot.

Just put it in the local garage, probably isnt anything major.

Park it up and have a look underneath to see where the waters coming from. That happened to me once, one of the jubilee clips had practically broken so water was slowly leaking out.

well one thing you don't do is top up the radiator with cool water when the engine is hot :-) there's a chance of causing cracks to develop in the radiator from thermal contraction.

you've got a cracked radiator / leaking water pump / cracked hoses someplace.

Another thing is why it may not be obvious is if you are parked at (even) a small incline ... the water may be traveling along pipes/hoses/lines/wormholes ... so check if there is a small puddle elsewhere than right underneath the radiator/engine.

If there's water dripping from under your car, it may be the radiator or one of the hoses connected to it.

If not, it may be the head-gasket that's blown.
And that's quite a bit of work (and money) to fix.

crack an egg into the radiator, that'll fix it. it'll stink mind.

And if it wasn?t it will be if the engine were run too hot/boiled.

Or you could just avoid this fecking about and buy a new car what works...

is it possible that you're confusing the petrol tank entry for the radiator entry?

could explain why your car conks out after one of 'em goes empty?

try purchasing some petroleum distilate from ye corner BP shoppe and shoving it in the hole near the rear

But yeah just go to a local mechanic you can trust and get him to have a look. DONT go to one of the main dealers, flipping pain they are and charge just stupid money, go to them as a last resort.

Still stunned all these years later when women (sorry for being sexist but from what i've seen its true) still cant change oil/add water.

I'm still stunned at men that change their own oil/water when Walmart do it for $28 with a 35 point inspection while you do your shopping.

It's the choosing that take the time, not the buying. (they do the car in 30 mins though)
