No contest. Moonstrike. Side A of the TZX (although it was actually side B on my copy). Proper animation during loading. Don't forget to turn off speed loading in your emulator.
Did you do the screen for NOMAD as well, Mark? It always had me in awe when it used to load up. "Who could have thought those designs up?" I used to wonder! Now I know. :)
Ken Farner and Jon Mayers were supposed to be writing Speccy "Roland's Rat Race", but after months of development they had nothing to show for it. (I know because I had to come in on a Saturday to try and recover files off their confiscated DEV kit). They were writing it in 'C'. Denton Designs ended up developing it in about 2 weeks. Probably why it is shite (the time limit - not Dentons)!
I think Ocean might have taken Farner and Mayer to court to recover the money already paid out to them, but they were students - so I don't know for sure if this happened.

No, it was Simon Butler. I was still at school when NOMAD came out.
although it is a sweet loading screen, it is somewhat spoiled by the advert for the video, suppose it adds to the retro charm tho.
tell you what else fricking annoys me, the boxed set of indy i've got, the first 3 films come with an advert for indy 4 at the start. indy 4 came in the boxed set. arrghhhhh
That Thorpe fella again. Some very clever attribute and BRIGHT placement. Look at how the right-hand red blade of the lifting platform is not only darker, but looks like it's casting a shadow on the doughnuts.
I like the Fairlight one too, particularly as it's actually a clue. But that Nightmare Rally one really is good (although it bears a lot less relation to the game). Maybe with Head Over Heels he actually got to see the finished game first.
The early US Gold screens are pretty impressive I think, especially considering the tools that must have been available at that time...
Most of the US Gold loading screens were also done by FD Thorpe (not sure about that Zaxxon one though), using a modified version of 'Melbourne Draw' that allowed you to grab and drop sections of the screen.

Simon Butler? I recently saw his name in the 'In Memoriam' section of WoS. He was talking about some programmer called Ian Weatherburn who had commited suicide (who also worked on NOMAD).

Does the Movieload part of the TZX work for you? It crashes here in both Spectaculator and Spin on the first bit with the sword...
I've always liked the Fairlight I loading screen.
Works fine on Fuse. You have to turn off all the tape traps though otherwise the emulator will try and speed load it, which breaks it.
Great game and great loading screen.
Gets my vote - was always hugely impressed by it.
I always liked Moon Alerts
Atic Atac and Jetpac were my favourite Ultimate ones.

Oh the irony :D
Not sure myself, though I think I played it on a Sinclair User covertape... was it a Players game?
Yes, Joe Blade II.

Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom
This one from C. Graham is impressive too:
And an obscure Code Masters title with beautiful use of colour:

Not sure if the Mikie one is by F.D. Thorpe or not...
Yup! It is.
It had that look about it... love his artwork!!

Hmm there seems to be a running theme in those... :)
Hmm... compare the above to:
Pretty similar in theme and design eh?
