Jet Set Willy on Commode64

edited December 2009 in Chit chat
Bit of a Commode mood at the moment.

Just looked at map of Jet Set Willy on the Commode, and it seems, small.

(excuse the width)

Was this all?

(I searched but found no previous mention)

It says that's the Plus 4 version and yes, it's a cut down version of the game. :)

its not the girth but the length that matters, lol
    So far, so meh :)

The C16 version as I remember has some interesting little rooms in it, that are different obviously due to limitations, and it came in 4 seperate files. Which ironically chopped to death and not really that well implemented seems more fun to play than the C64 version of JSW.

The C64 version of JSW II is undeniably quite good (they sorted those awful bloody stairs out for a start), but the screen has some weird formatting where it's something like 4 blocks wider than the speccy. This works really well for some screens but makes others seem weird to play or even feel a little unfinished. There are a few subtle changes like Dumb Waiter becomes Dumb Jetman, and you can actually go down the toilet (although it's quite pointless really).

It is small! I had this for the Plus 4/C-16 and it is tiny compared to the Speccy version (I had a C-16 as well as a Speccy in the mid 80's).
Having said that, I still think that it was rather cool that they managed to fit JSW into a 16K computer!
Monty Mole came out for the C-16, too. Again, a great feat of programming for a 16K computer.

Actually, come to think of it, the C-16 was quite well supported for a while by some of the big software houses. There was even a version of 'Mercenary' for it!!

You should really have posted the C64 map as whenever we say "Commode" here on WOS, I assume we usually do mean the C64 and not any other of the computers made by Commodore.

I guess the Plus 4 version of JSW was made to run on the C16/C116? In which case the number of rooms is really adequate. How many rooms could they have crammed into a 16K speccy version?

I must admit I have a soft spot for JSW II on the Amstrad CPC because that was the first version I ever played of the game (same goes for Manic Miner), before I got my own 48k Speccy in 1986. The CPC version was faster, had a nice "pling" sound when you collected an item and some - at that time to my ears - eerie music that did a lot to the atmosphere. Yeah, that's probably some of my fondest retro memories right there, playing JSW on the CPC with my brother, trying to find new rooms and creating a map ... we used an infinite lives poke but that didn't always help as "infinite death" syndrome could still rear it's ugly head.

Jetset Willy on the C64 was rubbish, but JSW 2 was good.

Might have been a smaller game , but I think I may have preferred that to a game massively bigger , but which I would never have completed (even without the bug)

Ah, the C16 is so much better than the Commode. Not played this one though. Need a new powersupply for my machine... They're 'impossible' to find!

The C64 version of JSW is just absolute shoddy programming, no doubt about it. The machine could have easily done a much, much better version. JSW2 was better, but changing the rooms to make them fit the wider screen just didn't work, in my opinion, and it never quite pulled off the same charm.

Try using a "breeze block" - they are about the same size and shape.

For best results, hold the breeze block about a foot above the C64, then release.

I seem to remember reading years ago with the C64 version of JSW (may have been JSW2 :-? ), you could jump down the bathroom toilet to a set of rooms not present in the Speccy version.

Something like "now your in it!" maybe.

I might grab a C64 emulator and have a look this evening now I think about it. :)

It's true! But like I said earlier it's pointless, when you try it you'll realise why as well.

Yes, JSW 2 on the C64, but it's a dead end, you can't get out again.

    Hmm, that's a thought. :)

    * makes note to go and get a CPC emulator and try this over the weekend , just for curiosity *

Now there's a thought. Would you like to find out? With a few adaptations to the Area 51 engine I could answer that question for you. :)

Played it a few times now, it looks mostly like the C64 version.

Does have a couple of cheats (most interesting one is a gravity toggle) in the disk image I found though, so I can do things like this :D

    jsw2_off_licence.png

I think the "hole in the ground" room(s) are missing but mostly everything else seems the same, I'll double check that coz I'm curious anyway over the next couple of days.

If I remember correctly that the C16/+4 JSW's were broken down into diffrent parts. Or JSW2 was at least so you can load one part play that and play the next part when your ready.

    The S/Shot above is from a CPC6168 emulator. :)

Interesting about JSW being split into parts. I was not aware of that.

As its a JSW type thread, the BBC version of JSW2 (there are actually two versions of this) , one has it split into parts (although loading from disc, you only notice a couple of seconds pause)

The other is much shortened (possibly it was a tape only version) and reduced unfortunately (although it has some new rooms but a lot of what we know as JSW2 is awol from what I can see)

I may grab a couple of s/shots of that over the weekend actually...

With a few compromises here and there, 37 - just about twice as many as the C16, in 8.5K of code. The stairs would probably be even worse than the original, so I imagine the programmer might be reluctant to release such a game. Not that I would know anything about it, of course.

JSW in 16K (Well, 8788 bytes, to be precise) might not have any ropes or sound, and there would need to be a few other cutbacks. Oh, and as mentioned before I expect the stairs wouldn't work very well either because the lazy so-and-so would get bored with it and move on to something else. On the plus side, I estimate he might be able to incorporate 38 screens, not 37, though perhaps that's a little on the optimistic side.

Further, I imagine the author might see it on his hard drive a couple of months later, and decide to upload it, warts and all. If such a program were to exist, the URL could possibly be something along these lines:

    http://rapidshare.com/files/322687515/JSW.tap

Other than that, I couldn't possibly comment. Anything else would be pure speculation.

Bugger! No free DL spots on (c)Rapidshare.

I'll have to get it tonight or tomorrow morning, it'll be throwing that message at me all day now

I guess they throttled free users when they updated a month or so back, until then I had no probs raping rapidshare as if I actually had a premium account, at one point it was downloading stuff at 450k a sec, and not even making me wait in-between DL's.

Then suddenly it stopped and now I'm lucky if I can get 1 file a day, must've been all those horror movies I was downloading, an admin probably spotted how much my leeching was ruining it for all the other spongers

Bloody hell it worked I was expecting the "Nelson Haha!" again (which I've not yet fallen for yet, but did click on on purpose one time to see if it did what it said on the tin)? Or a video of you shagging a box of Rice Krispies whilst repeatedly stabbing a bourbon creme with a Curly Wurly dipped in beeswax? :D
