Cruising on Broadway remake

edited November 2009 in Games
I don't know how much interest or any there is in this game any more but it was 97th in the top 100 ZX Spectrum games in Your Sinclair so I think it deserves some recognition.

Original screen vs remake:-

Incidentally the original author is a great bloke and has been giving me some good insights into the game and my updating of it.

The game is almost finished and here is a video which hopefully gives a good of how faithful it is as well as the updates that have been made.

The first I heard of this game was when the original Top 100 articles appeared in YS, but I didn't get to check it out until I got to Uni and discovered the WoS archive (the old Norwegian ftp address).

I love the Geometry Wars aesthetic in general, so your remake makes me happy. Look forward to playing it. Nice work.

I realise that "glowy vectors" has been done to death but it takes a load off your mind because as far as coder-art goes, it makes things a lot simpler. :)

    Oh I like that. That's a nifty re-make indeed!

Well it's released - I hope people get some enjoyment out of it.

Windows build only at the moment - maybe if I get enough donations I can get a Mac-mini LOL

Let me know what you think. It's easier to get into than the original - not half as brutal - hopefully this is a good thing.

    Cheers guys.

What a great remake! I loved the original Cruising and your version captures the essence of the game beatifully!

Cruising was one of the first games I got for my Speccy back in 1983 - which now seems like a lifetime ago! :-o

That is bloody brilliant! I LOVED the original Cruising game and this just takes it to another level. It's big, colourful and loud and I LOVE the neon vector graphics.
Another bonus is that the original was quite hard straight away where as the difficulty on this version just builds nicely.
    Well done, sir! :)

Cheers guys. One of my main aim was to try and make the game a bit more accessible (less brutal) than the original while keeping hold of it's fun and hopefully not making it too "casual".

It's good to hear people are enjoying it and bringing back some good Speccy memories too.

I can remember when there was a high-score competition for this game... was it in Personal Computer Weekly maybe? The mag with the fantastic Automata adverts on the back cover. :)

I've just added Mac & Linux builds to the download page but they are not very well tested and may or may not even work.

I don't have an Intel Mac or a Linux machine here so I can't test them myself.

Can someone please grab them if you are on either of those OSes and let me know if they work and if they work well enough?

    Thank you!

Works most spiffily indeed here on OS X!

    Yay! That's good to hear.

Dodgy "virtual machines" are just about good/fast enough to compile in but not good enough to run games or do anything that needs graphics acceleration.

    Cheers for testing it. :)
