I used to make animations in ZX basic. I tried to find my old recordings of the basic programs I made when I last whent home but could not find them. If I do discover them I will upload it so you can laugh at how crap and how badly spelt they were.

I'd say it depends a bit on what you want to do with those animations?

Do you want to do fullscreen animations or are we talking sprites for games, or what?

Full screen stuff realy. Erm programing skill = nil, but the two projects i have in mind are for my satisfaction only so theres no time limit.

If you could learn how to use a for-loop and generate a command to run (any language), then look into the NetPbm commandline programs, especially

    ppmmake
pngtopnm (and jpegtopnm, plus any other formats you want as source images)
    pnmcomp
    pnmcut
    pnmtopng

Once you've figured out how to cut an arbitrary rectangle from one image and paste it onto another (all you do is play about with X and Y coordinates, and widths and heights), then you can start feeding those parameters into for-loops, then the fun really begins :)

Edit: Although this is only if you want to go down the road where you're producing individual frames in order to join them up later to form one big movie.

A in 2001 as a first year undergrad at uni I attempted to make an animation in Flash-MX. I never finished it, but still have the intention to finish it sometime.

It involved no programing at all, the hardest bit about it was sycing the lips with the dialogue.

All of the characters were crappily hand drawn (in booring lectures) then scanned in via Photoshop.

Anyhow, I thought seen as we are talking about animation I'll show you what I did. I've never shown it to anyone (other than the wife whi thought it was silly) before as I only wanted to show it people when it was complete. Never mind.

It is called: The Wheel of Shit

The canned laughter cuts off for the last minute and I only have the following

    Screen one: The titles.
    Sceen two: Introducing the contestants.
Screen three: Introducing the hoast's assistant.

    Well here it is:

Let me know what you think. Is it worth finishing?

Flash was how I started. That was ten years ago. Erk.

Ended up writing my own 2D animation engine because the Flash AVI output wasn't great back then, and neither was Adobe Premiere's (lots of juddering on panning shots).

So I rewrote Flash in Perl, basically :)

The move to 3D was a natural progression from that.
