CD/DVD colection?

edited October 2009 in Chit chat
I'm moving to a new house, and I finally have space to organize my cd's/DVD's...

So I was wondering how do you guys do it? by year/decade? genre? directors? alfabetically? or simply put it as they show up?

I usually wouldn't be very picky, but I'm giving some Movie History classes so I do need a method to help me out...

I have my cd's in genre (black metal, thrash, rock etc), then split into A-Z. My promo cd's and vinyl are in no kind of order. I just root through and see what I've got (it's more fun that way ;) )

My DVD's are in no real order. I have a few films in order (Saw 1-5, Friday 13th series etc) and they are all together. I have the films that I watch close to hand and out on dispay, but the rest are in crates (the cardboard kind that HMV etc use) and are in rough order (horrors are together, tv comedys, wrestling etc).

I have a rough idea where things are when I need them and i found that if I bugger about and start moving things, I have no idea where anything is

I dont have a vast selection of cds/ dvds but heres my methods. With cds i go alphabetical all the way, the only things i seperate out are soundtracks/compilations. With dvds i roughly seperate them into categories there are just two many genres in film and people disagree about what belongs where. So i have science fiction, animation, foreign language, comedy,tv series and then everything else is together.

I have my favourites at the top but in no real order, think its a bit anal when people have everything set up in alphabetical listing or by genre etc.

Must be OCD when you reach a certain number of dvds. I stopped buying them a while ago as i wanted to catch up and watch all the ones i bought and still havent watched. Used to just be a bit 'OCD-ish' and want to buy all my favourite films/series despite then never watching them for ages but happy i had them on my shelf, ridiculous really !

Once i've finished with the series i'm watching i'll then get the next one i want and by that time theyre much cheaper as theyre not just out

Got to be alphabetic left to right and each artist organised by year of release (left to right as well).
I also have a database I wrote to keep track of everything (2000 CD's, 1500 vinyl, 2500 bootlegs and only about 300 DVD's).
I wanna tell you a story 'bout a woman I know...

    CDs by genre

    - Hip-Hop (last count 2,500+)
    - Drum and Bass (last count approx. 200)
    - 'Other' (last count approx 700)

DVD's in no order, only got about 50

got them all stacked on the floor in my room. my mate said my CD collection looks like a small city. (a nice way of saying "you're a geek")

Ya talking to me, if you don`t like my methods then look away, just because everything is neat and in alphabetical order, no cracked or broken cases, all of my LPs in new paper sleeves and polythene covers, with dividers with artist names on ( singles as well ), spectrum games in boxes sorted by company name and listed, highlighted which ones I have got, house looks like a shop, even bought a dictionary because it was in alphabetical order, have Breakfast, Lunch, Tea, because they are in order, criticise my ways will you, well youre
OUT of order. Give me an O,C,D. !

I'm liking the overlap in technologies here - cassettes and texting. You must have dug the cassettes out of the loft after years of non-use, just so you could rearrange them and p*ss her off. Quality.

My dvd's are just stacked up against the wall in my bedroom with the titles facing me. They're not in any order mind you.
My cd's are in a unit under my stereo, when that was full i put some in a drawer in my bedroom. They're in no order either and sometime it's hard to find a particular cd. I'm running out of space for them.

I'm in a catch 22, i should buy electronic singles/albums really, i was just put off a while back when they had security didnt they ? (So you couldnt burn them non stop to a cd ?). However i like having the physical cd in my hands, silly really as i rarely play them so theyre just stacked up on my shelf.

I always rip the cd's i have as i love making compilation cd's to play in my car or as i'm working at home i just choose one of the 100's of mp3's i've got on my computer to play.

Rarely put a cd in anymore

my Collector editions are kept in a separate box as are my Box sets.

All my DVDs are in alphabetical order, but I have "collections" seperated (Fulci, Argento, Raimi, Burton, King, Halloween etc). The music DVDs are on a different unit sorted alphabetically by band, then release date. DVD box sets are kept on a different unit on the top shelf because they'd never fit anywhere else.

My CDs are sorted alphabetically by band, then by release, although I have drawers for most of them, I do have 2 tall units with metal/rock on them (sorted the same way) and I have one huge bookcase that's just got Trent Reznor stuff on it sorted strictly by date order. Actually, there's Ginger (wildhearts), Les Claypool, Dave Grohl and Aphex Twin sorted the same way as Trent, although nowhere near as much!
Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens.
I don’t think I have the stomach for it.

Thats kind of like my DS and PSP games. I never put them back in the right boxes. Sometimes it can take me ages to find the game I'm looking for. It's interesting to see how I've switched between games too :)

yeah its a bit of a treasure hunt, you can usually go back through the games you played, like if you find a copy of a game, you look in box it came out of, and so on, until you find what your looknig for, or you find the game in your console. lol

May I suggest to read "Hi Fidelity" by Nick Hornby?

In said book (about a record store owner in London) the antagonist ultimately decides after long consideration to sort his gigantic record collection by... purchasing order. Now, that will keep you occupied! :D
