Xbox 360 hard drive
Hi all
Have just been asked via a very long chain of people if it is possible to recover/back up data from an Xbox 360 hard drive.
I assumed it's a case of putting it into a PC and reading the files from there but googling says different so am wondering if anyone has any knowledge of this?
At this stage I don't know what is wrong with the machine and am guessing that the HD is ok but of course it may not be.
Thanks

don't you transfer the data to a new hard drive (on a new 360) via a special xbox cable? i didn't think you could pull the data onto a PC?
Its one of those faults where the initial diagnosis report isn't very helpful!
I was just assuming that as its a hard drive, it could be plugged into a PC and the files read but like mile said, special cable from Xbox to PC, which won't do it as xbox isn't working!
Thanks again

The 360 will work without a hard drive, so if it doesn't work with the hard drive detached the problem lies elsewhere.
As far as the harddisk does, if you run the Xbox's repair disk option (which basically does chkdsk behind the scenes) it should fix it. If it doesn't, the hard disk is buggered and the stuff on there is basically lost. There is a special transfer cable that will move the data from one hard disk to another, but it kinda relies on both disks being functional already and, in any case, it's a complete transfer of data not a backup.
That's for the orginal xbox and requires a modded dash, it won't apply to the 360.
Oops... sorry!!
How about one of these? Sounds like it might be what you need.
