Inernet connectivity lost after long offline time

edited November 2009 in Chit chat
Hi all,

couldn't find anything on Google so I thought I may ask here.

Sometimes after I disconnect my connection to do something for which I don't need to be online, Windows (I'm still on XP) disables the internet connectivity after a certain idle time has passed so when I try to go online later, even though I get a connection to my provider, all applications (browser, online games, messenger etc.) act as if the computer was still offline.

I think I've read about this "feature" ages ago but I don't remember where. Any ideas where I can turn this off?

maybe something you use triggers it , I mean some firewalls have a feature where they have a "lock" or some software your using?

I did have a quick google of "tcp time out"

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/170359

might help? but it depends on your setup.. I mean my router does *cough* up and I have to do a reboot, it's an older netgear one.

Have you tried turning it off, then turning it back on again?

Turn off/on what? Probably a dumb reply by me but if you mean the computer, it obviously works again if I just restart Windows. The modem? Haven't tried and that shouldn't be the problem either. As for a router, I don't have one. Therefore I think it's something Windows does itself when the connection is idle for a specific amount of time.

ok.. it might be the power saving options IF your pc is a laptop.. and it turns off the RJ45 port to save battery life.. :)

how is your IP etc set up dynamic or static? that might be the issue perhaps.
