Debit Card Fraud.
A couple of weeks ago my wife lost her debit card. So she immediately cancelled it and our bank sent out another.
Turns out that even though the old card was cancelled, someone has managed to use it to buy train tickets almost every day since.
She has phones the bank and they are looking into it. They said we will send you a claim form. Never mind a f***ing claim form how can someone use a cancelled card given that I have a new one?.
Even the transactions have the old card number associated with them when looking up the account online.
Crazy eh?? Anyone else had this?

Get her to order loads of stuff online using the old card number and mail to friends addresses!
As the bank is already aware of the situation, any loss should be theirs and not yours but how can a cancelled card be used? Makes no sense.
Have had colleagues whose cards have been cloned and it was a real pain for them for a few weeks.
Hope it all works out OK.

Never mind ... credit card vs debit card.
they could have got another card, or set up one BUT to another address OR even ya mail re-directed. My card does get flagged up the odd time , normally for small amounts and I have to ring em and tell em.
I'm currently changing banks and slowly drawing my money to another bank..as mine took me for a **** and made me waste 60 miles of petrol , yet they sponsor a famous driver.. AND they had the front to call me a fraudster but not the balls to apologise..
my friends morgage was almost defaulted on , due to staff with fingers in the tills.. next day his branch was shut for "staff training" aka .. auditing it to find the theiving herbert who took out ?3k via phone banking..
they need to relise people don't need their BS / stress on top of normal life
that won't work all the time.. 1st check is always
if !(card + delivery address) then goto fraudster ++
I've had several Credits cards Lost, Stolen and details nicked.
First one (in 1993) was stolen from my room in a B&B in Peterbourgh, over 6 weeks the bloke spent ?5,000 in less than ?50 transactions, generally at off licences. From my bill you could see his journey from Peterborough to Edinbourg up the A1. Back then the shops did not get authorisation for <?50. I had to sign a form for each transaction saying it was not me. In the end it did not cost me a penny only time.
Second one I lost my card in Grimsby, some one found it and used it for one lot of petrol. Same thing - did not cost me anything.
Third one - Some dodgy salesman in Matalan in Birmingham stole my details. He caught me off my guard in a busy shop. I went to pay, did not have my Matalan Card with me, he said he didn't need it as he could use my post code. He did well to remember 16 digits, my name, and post code (probably trained from a young age). He bought train tickets the next morning, but got something wrong as my CC company rang me up to see If I had bought them.
This took a bit of clearing off my bill, but eventually I sorted them.
As I said keep calm, with a debit card it's a bit different as they have got your real money. I'd recommend your wife actually goes into a Branch of the bank (does anybody do that now-days), and befriend someone in there to try and help sort it out.
I would just like to point out I was buying clothes for someone else in Matalan, I'm purely a primark man.
Agree with that 100%
You said Debit not Credit card? Any chance she could withdraw all funds from that account until its all sorted out?
Or perhaps close that one and open up another one?
I am assuming that her balance is deminishing?
Maybe a bit insensative at this time, but are the tickets to the same place? I am trying to figure out where the "profit" is for the fraudster.
S
...and I would just like to point out that I hope you're not being serious? ;)
The ticket prices are irregular, where as my wife's was a constant. I'm wondering now if its a dodgy ticket collector now.
That's a maybe, ticket purchased by regular customer, paid for in cash, no receipt required, actually paid for with Mrs Scottie's card, cash pocketed.
(I'm not a criminal or a copper, had to do a study on money laundering a few years back for work so have a kind of professional interest in how and why these things work.)

that still doesn't explain why the bank are authorising transactions against a card number that should be locked
it's been reported.. SOOo no liability on your part, just hassle really..
ok I have a debit card, NOT a credit card .. but even with that the bank will honour things if I go over drawn (which is what they want me to do, to make some dosh out of me) to the tune of ?150.
any money you'll get back , so it's not a biggy and thats why it's important you keep a record of when you report such things.. If the bank staff aren't doing their job thats NOT your problem.
but debit cards, they don't do protection on normally BUT as long as you report it.. it's down to them
Well it turns out even after reporting the issue on Monday, my wifes canceled card is still being used to pay for train tickets.
So today we went to our branch all they wanted to do was wash their hands of us, telling us that it was not their problem and its only the fraud department that can do anything.
The did phone the frauds dept and had a conversation and said that they could not guarantee that it would not happen again.
I said "then close the account and set up a new one".
They said, "well we could, but the payments would still default to you. You are liable because a direct debit is guaranteed".
I said "We are not liable for transactions made on a card that you are have supposed to cancel".
They said "Well, it will still get traced to your new account so dont bother. Thats just the way the system works"
So I said "Well, then we will change banks then".
They said "Well we know your addresses and will still trace the payments back to you".
For f*cks sake  Do they offer no security the robbing bastards. If their fault. My wife has had a total of ?98 in small transactions now and they keep coming.
All the bank do is ask us to fill in a dispute form each time, but will not stop the payments coming though. Why??
The Ombudsmen were no help either, they said we can only act if the bank refuses to refund you.
So what the f*ck do we do now then?
If they still try to make you pay for items on a closed account, then you go to the Ombudsman again with a genuine complaint. Also contact citizens advice, the police, Watchdog on the telly, Office of Fair Trading, etc. etc.
Have you actually spoken to the manager of your local branch? Generally the staff at the customer desks are put there to sell whatever the latest account or scheme is, and know no more about them than what is in the leaflets they've been given to dish out. I've rarely found one who can even operate a calculator, much less do any mental estimates or arthmetic. You'd think at least basic numeracy would be a pre-requisite for working in a bank, but apparently not. It's like trying to get technical advice in PC World, where the best they can do is re-read the price tag to you out loud. Forget it. Either speak to the manager or take your business elsewhere.

I would go to a branch first thing tomorrow and tell the whole story, the manager should be far better than some scripted guy on the phone
then close that account.. just because you have direct debits with em means f*** all.. who ever your paying doesn't care if it's from bank of acme... as long as they get their money..
the sad thing is, my dad.. the bank love him.. SERIOUSLY.. because he's like a squirrel and always saved... me they treat differently.... why because it all comes down to the money ..
classic one is a friend was telling me, bloke has ?5 in 1 account and ?200k in another.. he defaults on the ?5 account.. so bank wanna charge him overdrawn etc.. it was an honest mistake.. instead of taking it from better account.
so bank people get REALLY arsey with him.. not realising his other account is healthy.. ends up he closes the account.. and has bank manager grovelling to him... so yer the more money you have with a bank.. the more leaverage you have..
However, we had spoken to the banks fraud office on the phone three times, one of which was the dept manager. We are then advised to go the bank and cancel the account and set up a new one. The bank thought otherwise and even phoned up the fraud office to check what action should be taken, they said "Don't cancel the account it wont stop the problem".
So much conflicting advice, so little help. Next week we go to the USA for 20 days, when I come back we may cancel our accounts.
I'm going to lodge a formal complaint.
However, this seems to be a flaw in the whole Visa card payment system, or at lease our banks interpretation of how it works. Basically they say that debit card payments are a guaranteed, but why they are guaranteed on cancelled cards I don't know? They are getting though because they are small amounts, but one was ?20.
Basically all my wife can do is keep watching her accounts and claim the fraudulent transactions back. But how long will this go on for?? Until the cancelled cards expiry date is reached in two years time??
when I wanted to speak to the manager, I got the lacky ... and not even an apology , so yer take ya money elsewhere f'em...
your card might also get flagged / blocked if your abroad, my B I L's does.. so you might wanna also tell em your in the US.
So we await to see what comes of this.
I was working as IT support at a bank, AFAIK its possible if there are companies (that you perform the transaction) that DOES NOT even check the ccv (the code on the back of the card) and of course they perform the transaction without using the 3-D Secure protocol.. etc etc..
Chris
They are loosers, they should dis-connect that card with the account!
Also, that train company SUCKS a lot because they DO NOT perform a validation check with VISA/MASTERCARD to see if the card is stolen! They just issue the tickets get the money, then as the card is stolen they ARE covered !
The credit card depts are covered by insurance when is fraud etc...
so in few words 'everyone' is happy except the legal owners of that cards..
My advice, too: go to ANOTHER bank -as the current sucks a lot , I know its a pain on the ass (change DDs etc)
Btw I am curious about the name of train company and the bank (I think the bank's name maybe starts with L*** as they are very crappy)
Chris
I have a bank debit card which is issued through VISA. As soon as I lose it I am to call either the bank or VISA and the card is immediately closed. I had to do this back in '05 and it was closed the same day I called VISA.
Sure, I live in the States but isn't VISA a universal company with the same rules globally?
You and Mrs Scottie go to the Bank where the account is held to see the Manager, no-one else will do, you need to speak to the Manager. Call first and tell them you are coming, if you speak to anyone on the phone take their name, their full name and use it in the conversation so they remember that you have it.
When you get there and are speaking to whoever is in charge, explain that you are concerned the charges are still coming in and that you want reassurance that the bank is aware of fraudulant transactions taking place on this card.
Also inform that that you are going abroad and need to use the card whilst away.
Explain as well that you are not happy with the attitude of the bank and staff so far.
Stay calm and do not panic.

Oh I see Normski has already suggested something similar.
(I'm joking - if someone makes your misses cry again I'll sort out the buggers. Just give me names and it will be sorted.)
My credit card was cloned. My bank contacted me because they keep an eye out for strange payments. A new card was issued the same day. There was one form to fill out (because they have fraud insurance). I didn't incur any costs over it. My new card arrived within 48 hours.
