Roger Jowett Problem

edited December 2009 in Chit chat
Well, I am writing here because some German users have already contacted me about Roger Jowett. He uses adress lists, for example the MB02 - user - list, to Spam over the guys completely. I have two e-mail accounts and sometimes I get about 20 invitations to Twitter, windows live, Facebook etc. Not only , he also sends a lot of emulator stuff (mainly some SAM Demos) in e-mails with about 20 MB also to that whole user list.

In my case it is maybe not so hard, but it disturbs my company business. But Mirko for example have a freemail account with not so many Megabytes which is only for Spectrum-users that are interested to join our club. If Roger sends us so many messages, the postbox might be full and other Spectrum Users cannot contact us.

I have written several times to Roger, pleasing him to stop it. But as a result I just got more SPAM.

My question:
- Does anybody know him? He is very active in forums and on YouTube. Can anybody influence him to stop this? This is not good for the Spectrum Scene, he should avoid this.
- If good words don?t help, how is the legal situation in UK? In Germany when I tell somebody to stop spamming and he don?t do, I can put him to court. Whats the situation in UK?
- Is he insane?

Looking forward for answers... and somebody who might have a right word with him. I even don?t know if he is a child or a adult person.

Regards

Thomas

    Block his email, simple as?

Ok, I wrote in the headline JEWETT instead of JOWETT...

How to block? I mean I can do it on OUTLOOK, no problem. But other guys use a online-mail-account. You can have a SPAM folder there, but still when you are over 2, 10, 20 or 100 MB (depends on mail account) it is full...

Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo offer this option (i.e. to block email addresses) ... I would think that most other free email companies offered the same.

Thomas just use mailwasher and bounce the emails :D

so you can read the headers and then bounce them back.. AND filter his messages

failing that contact his ISP.. OR the freemail web company..

on the headers for the email will show the IP address, and then just do a "whois" and if they are dumb enough to be doing it from home they can get booted..

failing that his machine might not be secure?!?! and a zombie..

    http://www.mailwasher.net/

if it is a freemail webmail account, then you can still block / report as spam.

is what I use anyway.. good luck

Hell yes... - I've just had to set up an email filter such that if the subject line matches "rogerjowett" or "roger jowett", it redirects that email to Roger's gmail address. If enough people do that, then hopefully he'll fix whatever it is that's causing him to do this.

The "fanboy" subject line was set because I feared it was just me, but "fortunately" he's doing it to everybody.

I see... even a big thread already existing.

So why we don?t have some men in black to handle it? Does anybody have his adress? Although I am from Germany, I would visit him and tell him a few words.

he posted here 6 hours ago.. in the sales / wanted bit..

but surely all these things have some sorta block function? pity though as I do contact people ONCE, if they don't reply I leave it at that.

If you believe it to be a problem that someone sends 20MB to a list, ensure the list is configured so that can't happen.

The practical situation is that nobody is going to spend the time or money to take any legal action.
    Is he insane?

Personal attacks are against the forum rules (and possibly libelous). Please don't make them.

Realistically: block him, move on. The rest of us have managed it.

Depends on your email set-up. All my email goes through a mail filter my domain name host offers, so I've set that up to forward these invites back to Roger Jowett (I see it as responding to an RSVP with a decline).

If you don't have filtering available, then sadly you are screwed. :(

Hopefully if enough of us with email filters set them up to forward these invite emails back to Roger, then he'll get the message that he's being antisocial and will adjust his entire online behaviour.

I'm going to put that down as a 'lost in translation' error. Bears repeating though. No personal attacks.

EDIT: I'm not too keen on the use of the guy's name in the thread and title. I'll leave the decision on that to Martijn though.

I probably don't know enough about this issue - what's the likelihood he has a virus that is sending all this bumpf out, or do you have to actually press buttons yourself on these social networking sites to send this out to people?

It would have been reported by now.

Just looking on FB, there's a "feature" (and I use the term quite wrongly) to import all the email addresses "from almost any online email service to invite your friends." (direct quote)

He has to do that manually, and remember it's not just Facebook, it's a shedload of other sites too.

And if he's had a virus, then he must have had it for several years.

    Hello Phillip,
I have a company running and I am not blocking customers queries. My company have several e-mails, one for repairs, one for customer support, one for orders etc. Should I install a blocker on each account and finally: Why I have to do the work, he should simply stop.

My question is, if maybe somebody know him personally and can explain him in easy words that he cannot disturb the whole Spectrum community.

My question if he is insane was really. I mean, maybe he have really a psychically problem, I am just asking. It was not meant as an offence, but maybe if he is insane I can understand better why he do it.

No no... I answered him that I don?t want get any of his mail and as an answer he sent me 20 invitations for Twitter. When I blogged my main account for Twitter mails, he startet use one of my other mail accounts. You cannot tell me that he didn?t do it on purpose.

In my case, he emailed me through my website asking me a question, which gets him an autoresponse from one email address. My subsequent replies to him gave him two more email addresses. Now I get invites to all three addresses, plus numerous binaries (not a problem for me on broadband and GMail, but I can sympathise with people who would find them more troublesome).

Twitter's Rulebook specifically outlaws "invitation spam". If you don't have a Twitter account, you can complain via terms@twitter.com - and if you are a Twitterer, follow these instructions.
  • edited November 2009
I thought if you are a 'twitterer' the email address is getalife@now.com ;)

Blimey. Just had the latest Jowett bulk email. Not only did it have the requisite amount of unwanted attachments and the long multipage ramble, he made the mistake of sticking everyone in the "To:" field.

I don't know if he's using a bulk email program, but the email addresses went from 0agp* to AA*, and there were 30 to 40 emails in the "To:" field.

Thank god i havent received anything from him.

Is the guy totally off his head ? He must have read this thread but he just writes total garbage like some 'bot' ? He seems to blame twitter for the email problems when it seems hes the one who adds tons to each spam post.

    What a frickin nutter

I saw two twitter request things from him last week. Only they were to the sales@ role account of my company :-?

I don't even know where he got that address from as it hasn't been advertised anywhere for yonks, and I haven't done anything of any worth of a spectrummy nature for at least five years (if ever, in fact).

I think he must be a mental. Just waiting for him to turn up on the doorstep now...

Boy I wish I only got two.. yesterday I got around 5-10 requests on 4 accounts.

I have written to Twitter (a Solicitors letter to them) pointing out the problems, and their system does not seem to remove my email address that a third has added.

Considering Roger has seen this thread and even 'replied' here (granted it was a load of tosh) i'm still stunned he doesnt see the problem.

Perhaps he does have a medical problem but surely after seeing all of this you think he would stop.

I think he's getting off on it all.

    He's "Buzby" - re-born!

I had another two Twitter requests from him over the weekend - I don't use Twitter, as I have no desire to read the banal happenings of egocentric "celebrities" and, personally, I have nothing worth Twattering about.

These Twitter requests were the first two pieces of Jowspam I've had for a while. Sadly, I fear they won't be the last...
